2000 GMT400 CREW CAB SFA SWAP-The Warden: Fuel leak fixed and awaiting surgery…

The ultimate goal for this truck is tow duty/family camping trips/small offroad adventures.
So long story short, my injection pump is on it's way out. It's throwing a PO216 timing code, and the idle is erratic with a very extra noisy engine associated with it.

I'm sure @AgDieseler and @KirsL can confirm that is most likely it.

I'll post a video I took on the way in to work this morning, soon.

A few seconds into the video you can hear the noise increase. Throttle and speed were held steady at that time.

You just going to stick with an electronic pump or is it worth swapping to a mechanical one? I don't know the advantages/disadvantages of each way.

@AgDieseler and @KirsL would know more about the advan/disadvan to the manual(DS2) vs. electronic(DS4) pumps, but since my truck came with the DS4 I'm pretty sure it's not worth switching to the DS2 pump. Although the tune costs more, I do believe you can tune them just as much as a manual pump.

DS4 can move more fuel. DB2 requires no controller. Either one works. Don't overthink it.

Yeah I figured it was better to just stick with electronic one. I'm guessing your pmd is remote mounted already.
Correct, mind is now bumper mounted slightly sticking out of the front intake hole.
[devil's advocate]

That being said, I can run my DB2 with a failed electric system & a broken lift pump. Try doing that with an electronically-controlled engine. :pimp:

I thought about that earlier this year when my alternator failed LOL.
Isn't Greg the guy who insisted that remotely mounting the PMD wasn't beneficial?
I have never said that. I've always read to get them out of the engine bay away from heat. But I have also been known to drink and innernets...

Hard to say but it's probably on its way out. 100k for injectors and around 150k for injection pumps is about average life while maintaining performance. They can and do last longer.

DB2 vs DS4 controlled. In the case of the 6.5 they're about even. Mechanical is simpler and stupid reliable but for big performance numbers it does ok. The beauty of the DS4 is the tune-ability. There's some guys making a lot of power but it's perfectly fine to daily.

Plus to change your truck over to a DB2 requires a variety of supporting systems to be modified also. You would need a stand alone trans controller, thottle pedal and cables, custom/aftermarket cruise control, modified t-stay housing outlet. That's just what I remember off the top of my head.

My advice is get a built pump from a good rebuilder and throw a decent tune in it. That plus a decent turbo will make it feel like a whole different truck.

While I’m no OBD2 expert, I always go back to the basics on poor idle quality before IP failure:
  • Clogged fuel filter
  • Air in the line, somewhere
  • Intermittent fuel pump
Could the crankshaft position sensor be intermittent?

That's the plan actually. Shooting for 350ish hp and flirting with the 500tq is the goal.

Stopped by a buddies shop on lunch to get some real time data.

Timing is extremely off. When asking for 10* timing, the truck was providing 25* and the idle was erratic. I'm almost 100% sure I have a failing pump. At 178k miles, I'm pretty sure it's the original pump.

That’s a lot of timing. I bet that sounded like a rod wanted to shoot out of the oil pan.

Pump, then a nasty turbo and intercooler?

Yes, it makes my peepee shrink every time it makes that awful rattle.

And yes that's the plan. Nasty turbo, tune, then an intercooler. Then a locker or limited slip at some point :burnout:

Check out Quadstar tuning, he has a really nice turbo for these engines. It doesn't require an intercooler either. He's on a couple of the 6.5 paged on fb.

I know all about those guys. The Super 54 is on my radar. As well as Kris Stratton is the one who will be rebuilding my pump. He works for Quadstar and/or they sub out to him.
