2000 GMT400 CREW CAB SFA SWAP-The Warden: Fuel leak fixed and awaiting surgery…

The ultimate goal for this truck is tow duty/family camping trips/small offroad adventures.
So a ‘99 P42 Step van with a 6.5 would most likely be the same Vin F engine that is in my crew cab then?

Gep engines with the Navistar diamond logo in the valley were made I believe from 2002 on. They are the improved casting and use metric threads but otherwise similar to the older 6.5s in every way.

The p400 production started somewhere around 2008. When the up armored hmmvs needed more power due to nearly doubling in weight. It's only available through an aftermarket supplier and is basically the best 6.5 money can buy. The biggest difference is the main block girddle attached to the oil pan rail. The also were rated for 250 hp and finally had the strength to handle a lot more than that.

A 99 stepvan will have the same gm cast engine as your truck unless it's been swapped for a brand engine at some point. Then it could be a gep block.

You blow yours up or something?

Nope, no boom yet. Just thinking for further down the road if I ever want to do a built engine.

Always good to have a plan. Since I'm dealing with engine issues of my own, I'll thow my thoughts out there.

If you have the money, I would buy a brand new get engine. Yeah its around 7 grand but it's all new with the latest and greatest, beside headstuds, done to it. The p400 is I think $8500, but you need to get a custom oil pan to fit in the pickup truck chassis.

Sounds like a lot but when you factor finding a good engine to rebuild, machining, and all parts. You're around half way there money wise. I'm building a 6.2 for my truck and even on a severe budget it's still going to be almost 2 grand to do. I'd love to buy a brand new one but it's just not in the cards for me right now. Since you have time you could save up for it.

I'm thinking with these Vin F engines that maybe take the better of the 2 and just have a good replacement ready for any emergency. Quickly go through them and fix any issues.

Yes, the ultimate goal is to find a P400 and shoot for 340hp 650tq.

Let me save you some monies, and give you more room under the hood...
