2003 Duramax -Injectors done, and front end rebuild overdue.

DD/Tow rig
The boys wanted to go do some trail riding on Saturday, and since I knew I had the harness ordered for the K5 I was just a little excited to get out and I decided we were going to make a short run to Tuttle Creek to do some very mild exploring in the Duramax to see how it did offroad. Got some tools loaded up and some snacks, and got the family piled in the truck to head out.

Noticed my message center on the dash said "battery not charging". Alternator showed it was only charging around 11volts, and the battery light was also on.

Popped the hood and got my multimeter out to check actual reading at the alternator. Showed 11.2 at the plug. Well poop...

I didn't want to spend the $120 for an O'Reilly unit knowing I could get one at my work for $20 with a 12/12 so I parked it and took my boys on a hike locally instead.

It also ruined our plans for boating on Sunday (along with 40mph winds).

Better to have a plans for a hike then hiking because your broke down.

What do you do when you are quarantined with COVID-19? You take your DD truck offroading. Family all has covid, and we’ve been couped up for days. So today we ventured to Tuttle Creek and did some exploring.

Spent a few hours on the trials then hiked a little bit. Truck did great.

So today I am tackling some issues on this truck. It’s always said the RR door is ajar since I’ve owned the truck basically, and the ABS light has just started randomly coming on. Also the AC developed a leak a couple weeks ago, and we have 2 weeks of 100+ temps starting this week.

Started messing with the rear door by checking wiring, plugs, sensors/latches, and fuses. All came back with not being the issue. Decided to button it back up as I had wasted a lot of time with dead end diags.

I switched focus to the abs light. I started by cleaning the common ground issue under the driver’s footwell. Cleaned it all up and painted it, but that was not the issue. Checked fuses again with no success still. Might have to look into a new brain box.

While checking the abs control unit and plugs, I saw where the ac leak was coming from. The service port for the high side line was leaking. I found out that it was designed from the factory to be a one time use valve and that they can fail at any time. Ran to the parts store and picked up a replacement valve. Recharged the ac and everything seems to be working fine.

So only 1 of 3 things got fixed, but other duties called and I had to call it for now.

I'd review codes in the ABS if you can. That will give you more direction than anything. An ABS module is a possibility but for the price I'd make damn sure that's what it is. A wheel speed sensor could be the issue or a wheel bearing that is slightly wobbly causing the sensor value to go out of range.

For the door ajar issue, the switch is in the latch assembly if I remember right. If the circuit isn't shorted or open, you can probably go right to the latch assembly. I wish I still had access to the service manual to prove which way it goes.

Was off work with my boys today, so we made it an adventure day.

Started out magnet fishing. Found a few fishing lures and the bottom section of Jimmy Hoffa’s barrel lol

Since the water temp was 35 degrees, we only did this for about 30-45 minutes. They then decided they wanted to go explore some Offroad trails, so we drove over to Tuttle Creek in the ‘03.

Spend about an hour and a half exploring trails, and running into obstacles that were a bit too aggressive for the truck we were in. After sliding around in the mud for a bit, we headed back home in time for diner and Scouts.

It was a good day to get my mind off of financial crap, and remind myself that none of it matters as long as I’m adventuring with my boys.

On that note, they are dead set on coming back asap in the Jimmy lol.
