2004 Silverado Crew Cab Solid Axle Swap (LLY with ZF 6 speed)

My shocks finally came in for the rear... There was a miscommunication and apparently they've been sitting at SDHQ for a couple weeks. Such is life...

I figured now that I had the right shocks I could get some bump stops too so I could keep the rear tires out of my fenders.

I installed the shocks and welded some mounting tabs on for the reservoirs, then I moved on to the bump stops.
I added a chunk of 3/8" steel to the top of the upper spring plate and fabricated some mounting brackets for the bump cans.

Unfortunately while I was under the truck I figured out what the clunking offroad was. The brand new Timkin carrier bearing is blown out already (the rubber mounting). I'm going to have to go with a one piece driveshaft I think. It's going to be long...

My wife and I decided it would be nice to be able to put our rooftop tent on the truck so we don't always have to take the trailer, especially if it's just for a night or two. I picked up a TracRac bed rack and rail system and modified it to keep the tent as low as possible. I haven't mounted the tent on it yet, but with it set up this way, the tool box will still open fully and the tent will only stick up 8" higher than the roof of the truck.

Out of curiosity, I held one of the bump stops up by the front of the truck and decided it would be pretty easy to get rid of the hard poly bumps and throw another set of 2x2" Kings up front too. That's tomorrows project...

My truck came with a one piece rear drive shaft... I thought all CC/SBs did!?

I did a little reading on it yesterday and apparently it's just completely random whether you got a one piece, two piece, aluminum or steel driveshaft. Mine is two piece steel for reference.

Everyone we have has got one piece aluminum we have 6 of them.On the yard and any others I've seen are the same.

Maybe it's a area thing?

Or LLY with ZF6 speed. I know my tcase is different too (manual shift)

Yeah could be a standard deal...the trucks we have here are all different years but all allys.

I have read on Diesel Place now that I think about it, that some guys have the two piece shaft, like you said before seems to be random, I`ve just never seen it.
Don't mater much just kind of funny GM would make two versions for the same truck.

When we got my sons 01 extended cab it came with a steel shaft and a nice big dent in it...that was spendy to replace. I couldn't find a used one at the time. so had to get one made.

Are you going need longer than stock for your truck?

I think stock will be fine, I can use my ends and new Spicer u-joints but I'd like to get the tube made of .120 wall chromo or at least Dom.

I also want to get the front shaft lengthened with a standard 1350 yoke so I don't have to use a conversion joint.

We took the Silverado out for a test run yesterday. We tested out the new bed rack by strapping our kayaks on. That worked out nice, they're up and out of the way and it leaves the bed open for all of our other stuff. I think I could even have them up there with the trailer hooked up.

The new shocks and air bumps made a huge difference in ride quality offroad as well. It rides almost as nice as the S-10 now.

Loving your truck more than my Blazer... I'm already missing all the creature comforts. I'm pondering on the idea of an LQ swap and an S-10 blazer body swap on mine but that's a debate for another thread.

Really loving all of your projects!
