2007 Build at a Glance

If you guys need anything let me know... I'm just up the road in Fresno. I can turn a wrench and work in a machine shop so whatever comes up lmk if you need more man power...

Material and tools being gathered for a couple of fact finding work days being organized by Esteban86K5 and bggrnchvy. The main thing to be accomplished these days will be to determine everything that needs to be done to complete J’s last build to the demanding standards that J would have placed upon himself

. Once completed, Willyswanter’s Mom and I look forward to meeting more and more of J’s club and forum friends as we take the Truggy to various events

JR is working on the Mog 419’s and is in need of extra pinion shims should anyone have some. Also, if you know where to locate detailed cut-aways, cross sections and build information on the 419’s it would be helpful; thus saving JR time looking for this information. Setting up the pinion and all is a detailed job and he needs proper information. If any of the military guys out there have rebuild information, please send it to JR and I’ll reimburse the postage.

Once the axles are completed

, JR will be scheduling a couple of build weekends to complete everything.

TODAYS UPDATE!

While JR was working on Jason’s Truggy yesterday, I was at Hollister Hills for the first time at Nor Cal Off-Road’s Blazer Fest 2008. There is both good and bad to report from my trip and I might as well get the bad out of the way first. As soon as I arrived; Kevin the owner of Pacific Fabrication advised me that the plans to take J’s truggy there for a week so bggrnchvy can complete the generally cosmetic portion of this build was cancelled; he is just too busy to fit J’s Truggy in at this time; this was a big setback and disappointment. He did offer to allow a couple of build days but the logic of that plan escapes me because it takes 5 hours driving each direction. I remember what a long day it was when Jason drove to Pacific Fabrication to build Kevin’s link suspension for him on his Truggy and then drove home that same day getting home between 2 and 3 in the morning so he could be at work at 7AM that same morning; but that was Jason, anything to help. Or as Jason’s mom reminded me of all the times we would see Jason in the shop at 1 and 2 in the morning after working all day making a part for someone. When asked why he didn’t wait until the next day he would always say they need it and when asked who the parts were for he would always say, “Someone”. We would see him the next morning leaving for work at 6:30 and ask him what time he went to bed and he would say, “around 4”.

Now for the good news from Blazer Fest; to start with, bggrnchvy stepped up and offered to come to Bakersfield the 4th of August and stay that week and complete everything needed to get the Truggy ready for Moab. While at Blazer Fest I had the opportunity to talk again to many of J’s friends that I had previously met at his memorial as well as meeting many new ones. I now understand what Jason had told his mom and me about how he loved so much the diversification of individuals that belong to all the different clubs, including Nor Cal Off-Road (it’s hard for me not to say NorCal Big Dawgs). I had an opportunity meet people that wanted to tell me stories about them and Jason, about how their relationships with their families have changed and in general, what their lives are like today because they knew Jason. It was enjoyable seeing people that didn’t have the discretionary funds to build a fancy buggy or truck but just loved to wheel whatever they had. You could sense their passion for the sport as Jason had and it was their intention to push their rigs to the limit, no matter what the outcome. Also, there was in general a deep feeling of comradeship between this diverse group of individuals that had come together with one goal, survive a day of intense wheeling and be able to talk and laugh about it that night. As one member told me, “I save all year to be able to fix my rig and pay for this trip; this is what I look forward to all year”.

I know I’m running on but in closing I want to say thank you to Dan (gokartergo) and his family and co-workers for a great event and the Mug Root Beer / Nilla Wafers salute to Jason as well a remembrance Noel last night and the honor of being named Member of the Year - understanding that it was another way of honoring Jason.

I am glad you got the chance to see what it is that makes us love this hobby/sporyt/lifestyle. Hopefully one of these days I will see the truggy on a trail somewhere and get the oportunity to meet the people who raised such a great person.

What a great weekend; the only thing missing was DWitcher who was sick and stealthcammo1 had to spend the day determining why his electrical system wasn’t charging but he will come by and visit bggrnchvy.

Early afternoon today, barbastard and jay68yak had to leave for the bay area and bggrnchvy and Esteban86K5 stayed until well after 5PM, after all of them starting about 7:30 this morning. Except for about an hour late this afternoon that was used for bench wheeling, everyone just kept plowing forward with all the time consuming tasks at hand. First I’ll explain the bench wheeling came about because I went to eat lunch and left Este and Kyle alone and they were really tired after last night. But when I got back, I joined them and we discussed a Texas trip for next year with Esteban86K5, bggrnchvy, Lifted Cracker and I driving J’s Dodge tow rig, gooseneck with Rockstar Limo to save fuel, luck the truggy carries 4.

Anyways, Este will be posting pictures soon of the weekend. Thanks to everyone for helping me.

Thanks for updating CK5. I've kept track of the build ever since day 1. Never met Jason in person but used to talk to him even back to the days of ORC and the 2wd black truck. Definately cool that your completeing the rig in his honor.

Today was another day of no pictures because all Kyle did was enjoy the 103 degree temp. and sunbath. Really, he finished fitting the back doors, rewired the whole fricken truck practically and got the on board air working so we know have front and rear air lockers. I must give bggrnchvy a bunch of credit for not giving up on the air system in this heat, he stayed mentally cool and focused and got it done.

Tomorrow will be installing the rear doors, hood and windshield. Friday is take the truck to muffler shop for new exhaust system and lastly, Sunday is test day!

Got to give him credit.I hate electrical and the heat. He is just one of those outstanding guys you can depend on. He has helped me throughout the years.

OOOOOtesting!!! 123

Here are some of the most recent pics of the build.

Yesterday was the tear down of the rear section, interior, and the wheels. The interior needed to be fully welded and the Urn had to be remounted. The cast on the bottom of the case was no match for the weight of the Urn. SO we redesigned the mounting. All the existing tubing had been there for a while and it had never been painted so there was some surface rust to take care of. The rear section was all good except for the paint so it was fully torn apart, scotch padded, and put back together. The wheels had been only tack welded together due to lack of planning and running out of time on my part before JR took the truck. So I broke them all down and finished welding them. Between the four of us we painted and remounted them and got the truck sitting on it's own once again.

Thanks to Kyle, Nate and Jay for working so damn hard this weekend. This is the work that no one likes to do, and even though It was hot the intensity never stopped.

On to the pics.:smokin:

Kyle has been working on the Doors. The front doors still need some work on them but the 2 back doors are already installed. The rear crossmember needed a little reinforcement so Kyle also took care of that today. Whole bunch of misc items where taken care of as well. A location for the fire extinguishers was found and they were installed. They can be reached from the inside or outside with having to open a door. The hood was another item that was completed today. We gave up on the hinge idea since the can isn't exactly square after the roll. So we cut it down and attached it with hood pins. It getting painted tonite and will be on by tomorrow. The truck is sitting on the trailer tonite so that it can go to the exhaust shop first thing in the morning. Saturday will bring some fluid checks and Sunday will be a little shake down run.

All is going good and right on track for Moab in 4 weeks.

Onto the pics.

Got a few pics of the hood and exhaust. I'm thinking the rear may be a little close to the lower links but we will find out tomorrow.

SO I weighed the Tow Rig, Trailer and Truggy today. The way it sits with 2 full tanks of fuel. Watcha think it came in at?

Here are a few pictures from today. What an awesome day to see it all come together and work so flawlessly. I just wish that everyone who has helped so much (especially Kyle) could have been there to witness it all work.
