2007 Xterra:Terry's Bolt On Wheeler

@campfire I finally have the $$ to get my rear axle.... and a buddy just priced me a tire carrier bumper for an all too reasonable price so that's probably delayed yet again!!! :haha: Why can't we hit the lottery?!?
Hahaha!

Ya know, selling off projects two years ago freed up a bunch of my time and funding for other things. Taking a break for a while can be beneficial if the juggling is getting to ya...

It's more an issue of timing. These are both things I've wanted to get done for a long while now. Wouldn't be so much of an issue if the deal on the tire carrier wasn't as good.

We'll see how this weekend pans out...

Yeah the axle will still be waiting for you when you have money again.
The tire carrier won't

That's what I'm thinking.

Taxes should beef in soon. We'll see what's going where with them and I might have some spare money to help do both..

I made the call today to get a set of 3.69 geared diffs pulled from a yard in NC. Guy said they should be out next week most likely.

I've got a popping in the rear that I think is leaf spring bushings so I'll try to investigate that this weekend and see if I need to order some to replace them when I swap diffs.

Man that's going to change some stuff for sure!
No kidding! I've been pretty pleased with how this thing does as is so those lower gears and locker are going to be awesome.

I'm fighting inchitis thinking that some 295s would be ok as well as thinking on a Titan swap but I really don't think I'll go through with that right now. I think it'll affect the dependability of the rig too much.

Might-As-Well syndrome, eh? Just remember your original purpose for the build:

I realized that I just don't have the time to do a lot of fab work. I have the equipment and some basic ability but I just can't seem to find any down time in my schedule to do it. I sold the K5 back in January and decided to focus on my Xterra and shoot for a moderately capable wheeler and something comfortable to do some traveling and camping in. "Overlanding" if you will.

It's ok to change goals, but just make sure you actually want the end result, rather than daydreaming yourself into bigger and bigger mods that defeat the whole point of having a wheeling rig with stock levels of reliability. It's a delicate balance for sure.

I've seen a lot of buddies' rides get sold off for parts and even ditched my K5 for that reason. I was considering the Titan swap for the added wheel travel but keep the 285s for dependability and because I'm really pleased with how this thing performs.

But for now I'll be content with the lower gears and hopefully leaf springs that don't pop and carry on. I am going to put a shim plate in the rear to pitch the pinion up. It has a slight vibration when I'm unloaded so I'm running near the critical angle on the U-joint. Other than that there's no changes planned this go round.

I wish. The backing plates got crushed by the yard so I've got to order those. I'm going to look it over tomorrow and make sure that's all it needs.
Literally every axle we sell is like that. Some people get soooo pissed!

Drained and opened the front diff today. It's in good shape and ready to go back in. Just needs shaft seals.

Also got the rear inside and on stands but then it got cold so I came inside. Fixing tacos for the family tonight.

Just ordered my backing plates and some seals to get the diffs ready to install. Hopefully they'll be here this week and I can get them ready to go next weekend.

I'm pretty excited about getting this thing going!
