2008 Buggy Build Thread: Rockwells and 49's

Bug Stomper, he grabbed one or two with his fancy pants phone this weeked. :haha:

Second b-pillar and braces are tacked in. Cut down the mid-plate today and started on the x-brace. I'll finish the x-brace tomorrow. I've been advised to hold off on the door bars until the interior is 90% done since it's going to be a royal PITA to work on the interior with them on there.

Waiting on seats, then they, the transmission, and t-case will get mounted and the front end construction will begin.

phhhsssss

I didn't take pics of your buggy I was taking pics of mine:haha::haha:

subscribed. As for that radiator Id put acouple bars over it. its too pretty to have a rock go through the first time it rolls over. That and a 220 deg. shower on your back is HOT.

A friend of mine has a old dodge on 47s, 2 steering rocks and custom frame (wheelbase extends 3 feet). Yup its sick. He has a big red light on his dash to tell when the line locks are on.

Rad protection is in the works. X-brace is done so I think that's what I'm going to go work on right now. :D

there ya go. I;ve been learning to bend tube all weekend and my cage is coming out good. It sure makes your brain hurt tryin to make the cage fit in tight to the sheet metal and thinking about how you're gonna get it all welded in and fit together. I'm looking forward to getting some of this harder stuff outa the way so I can just make braces and the easy stuff.

I'm just glad I don't have to worry about sheetmetal and how to weld the cage when it's up tight to the body. Bend, notch, cover anything you don't want splatter on, and tell Kert to pull the trigger. :haha:

Rad protection is looking good. My real radiator should be here today or tomorrow and my seats should be here tommorow. Going to call the bank to get my daily limit on my card raised and see if I can order up some coilovers today.

Burned out a nice looking panel to hold 4 LED for taillights on Saturday. It's tacked to the ass end currently. Still thinking about running 'Trapps out the triangular holes in the tube work, but I really need the c/o's here to determine whether or not I can deal with the length of a Supertrapp at that location or not. Anyone have any experience with their "disc only" kits?

Once the seats are here, interior and front end construction is awn. :D

Very cool build! Maybe you answered it already, but how are you going to reverse the drivetrain rotation? With the engine backwards, wont the buggy go backwards when the tranny is in drive?

The rockwell chunks are going to get machined so that I can insert the pinion backwards. That'll make it go forward. You (Muddermilitia) aren't allowed to scroll down until you post some fockin' pics of your new star accessory. :D

D'oh! I was outta state for the last 5 days at a swap meet, so I havnt finished painting the accessory yet. But I did pick up a sweet pair of subaru Brat jump seats for the back of the rig :)

Got the main shape of the front end worked out...and it looks like ass. :haha:

Clearing 49's, a pinion brake, a winch, and maintaining decent visibility sucks, especially when the driver is 6'5" tall.

I finally gave up and (after wasting a full stick of tube) stopped the front end short of the front axle by an inch or so, kinda looks like I smashed the whole thing into a wall. Oh well, I got the steering column tacked in at least. Tomorrow I'm going to work on the rest of the structure for the front and hopefully I'll be mounting pedals soon. Might spend some time making linkages for the 205 and 465 as well.

In other news, the drivetrain and seats are mounted. Now I just have to figure out how to fit all my gauges, 4 shifters, a rear steer joystick, a heater, a winch, 3 pedals, 2 batteries, a fuel cell, front links, and a driveshaft into the front of this thing. It's going to be an adventure. :eek1:

All that there will be a cake walk compared to one thing! Getting that rear drive shaft in......:doah:

...and the rear driveshaft will be a cake walk compared to mounting that side of the lap belt for the passenger seat.

Don't forget the partridge in a pear tree:haha:

I might have to buy a couple of suitcase weights off of you to keep the nose of this thing down. :haha::doah:

Got pissed off, cut the entire front end off. Reworked it and I'm fairly happy with how it turned out. Winch will be mounted Monday, spent most of the day today making some blingin battery boxes. Steering column got re-mounted. Once everything is mounted in the front clip it'll be on to pedals.

Batteries are done, steering column is done, heater will only take a few minutes, pedals will be pretty simple, the winch mount is already drawn up, and the fuel cell will be a custom piece anyways.

Cable shifters should be here at the end of next week, as should the rear steer joystick. Everything is really starting to come together. Oh yeah, there's a pair of 14" SAW coil-overs in the mail as well. Once I pick the joints I want to use, I can have the suspension done in pretty short order. Everything is starting to come together. :D

I'll grab some pictures on Monday, unfortunately due to the humidity lately, the chassis will definitely have to make a trip to the sandblaster's before it gets painted. The back end is getting pretty bad already.

Very interested in these cable shifters you speak of. :D Is it a kit or are you piecing it together yourself?

Cable shifters are coming from NWF. I asked that the 205 bracketry be left out so that I could set it up to shift from the back of the case. Also, their price for a 205 cable setup is a little on the high side IMHO so I saved a bit of money there as well.

I'll grab some pictures tomorrow. Not the sexiest thing ever, but rocks and 49's are an absolute whore to build around if you're trying to keep the rig low to the ground.
