3/4 Ton Swap is DONE: **d-shaft question**

symmetrical as in the truck overall (cut the front and the back) or just symmetrical in regards to the fender itself? I was only planning on cutting just inside the reflector (about 2-3") and doing the same on the other side...

oh and no thanks iwaxmyjimmy...I don't think 4.10's and 44's are a good idea...they aren't even really low enough for my 38.5's in my opinion...

I forgot whos truck this is but I like the trimming...I only need to do the front but I like how he went just inside the reflector then tapered the other side...this is sort of what I want my truck to look like eventually...

measure twice and cut once. you can always take more off, putting it back isn't as easy. use masking tape and a sharpie to lay out the lines.

are you rubbing the fender? or the inner fender liner? a lot of people don't like them for the trail but Bushwacker's would look really nice on that truck and hide the cuts.

you only get one shot at cutting the bed. fenders are easy to replace, bedsides are expensive.

yeah I know...I'm keeping that freaking carriage bolt on my work bench so the next time I want to do something stupid (or someone tells me what I did was wrong...more often than not thats the case...I don't ever do something stupid knowing its stupid) I'll look at that. :)

Ohhh I almost forgot...I don't know if its because of the different width axles or the different BS on these new rims (maybe both) but my front tires are rubbing A LOT now. Before they would only rub if I was running something over...now they rub if I go full tilt with the wheel....sooooooo the next big project will be doing some :grind: to the front fenders. :wink1:
Avery!

There is a post by MuddyTazz here on CK5 that give's tremendous detail and instruction on fender trimming. It gives a complete schematic diagram with measurements. Perfect for what you need to do! I'll try and find it for you. If so, I'll edit this post and include a link.

This is exactly what I was trying to convey above. Search, search, search this site for the information you need, before you pick up the saws-all and start sheering sheet metal. Use this awesome tool! Please, before Ira has a nervous breakdown, and resorts to heavy drinking and developes a nervous twitch. :haha:

HERE YA GO AVERY! THIS SHOULD MAKE IT EASIER! GIVE THANKS TO MUDDYTAZZ FOR HIS KINDNESS IN MAKING THIS SCHEMATIC....

Avery!

Y'all come back now, ya hear!

A word of caution Avery. That is the basic template I used to cut my fenders. If you use it as it is drawn you will loose your inner fenders. You can tweak the drawing to get what you are specifically looking for and keep the inners.

I personally want to cut more as I did not take my time and it shows on the quality of the cuts.

Thanks Ira for following up for me. I knew the source but I've never cut fenders before. This is what teamwork is all about, and I appreciate you working closely with Avery to help him build the truck of his heart's desire.

How 'bout you posting pics of your fenders? I'd like to see them. I don't think I'm gonna need to cut my fenders, but I've also been thinking about Bushwacker Cut-away Fender Flares.

No thread-jacking Avery, just piggy backing!

Thanks!

Thanks Ira,

I guess the only question I have is that I know you cut the fenders for extra clearance on the big meats, but at what point is hacking too much. In your pics, it looks like the floor underbelly is really exposed. Is this a normal tradeoff or is it a glitch that needs to be corrected?

I am going to cut my fronts like Readymix did his and trim the outer edges of the core support. Eventually the front fenders will come off and I will use some tube and sheet steel to make a flatfender type deal.

Not sure what you mean by this? What is the underbelly?

Yep that is the firewall. If you remove the inner fenders that is what it looks like. You can see where I beat the pinch seam over so my tire would not get cut on it. With my axle in its current location the tire will hit that.

Thanks Ira. I appreciate the explanation. Don't know if I'm gonna hafta trim yet. Time will tell.

lol...you guys are funny...the best part Manny is this is just one little thread...I've got a big one from when i got the truck a year or so ago and MANY more threads that are massive. I don't know...they just seem to grow like a weed!
