That might be good for the other 49 but for Cali you have to have everything that the donor engine had originally and it must pass a sniffer test they do not specify if the sniffer is based on body year or engine year. Going by everything else it would be engine year.

All cylinders have 145-150 psi. Except #5. It has 25 psi. Like twenty-five. Not one hundred twenty-five. :doah: All the compression (leakdown test) is coming out the crankcase (dipstick)

Also looks like the '80 truck should have had a 400 cid, but has a '78 454 cid. :doah:

Vortec swap sounds like a pain. Maybe use the Vortec carbed? Or TBI? Anyone have experience with this in CA?

But, but, but...it's a pain, and expensive. It seems Vortec 454s aren't as much more powerful than their predecessors as the 5.7s are than theirs. But it is injected.
 
Do they actually check the engine numbers? If not, just build any old SBC, a 400 or factory roller cam block would be nice, and run a Q-jet with whatever factory smog stuff was required. I would think that an AIR pump would be all you need. My 80' K20 has AIR but no cats from the factory. I'm thinking about putting fuel only TBI on it eventually, I think I can hide it pretty well as it only has a couple of sensors and uses the factory large cap HEI. You could keep the 454 too, if you want the BBC. If the vortec is complete, just add cats and drop it in. Fuel delivery will be the biggest issue, running a return line and such, particularly if you are keeping dual tanks.
 
I don't think the Vortec will bolt in. Not sure. The electrical, fuel supply, and emissions stuff is what bothers me. Need to get on the phone with some experts tomorrow.

Talk to RyanB he put a 6.0 in his first gen he could help you out with what all is required.

FYI My burb originally had a 400 small block in it. I still had to pass the sniffer after i put the 500 in it. It Passed with flying collors and didnt even have the egr valve hooked up, no cats iether.
 
If you run the Vortec injection then yes, you will need to supply HP fuel, and mess with the computer, etc. Also, I believe the ECM on the auto trans models controls the tranny too, so you'll have to work around that. If you're going to keep FI, I'd keep the OD trans too. You could just put a carb manifold on it and run it in place of your current 454.

Thanks...that would be a good idea...I wanna get this thing registered and wheeling by new years, maybe carb it for now and set up the vortec and get the tank, etc. as i have time/$.

Not too worried about the sniffer, it's the visual check. I'm in CA :doah:
 
Talked to Pacific Fab today. They know their stuff. (Thanks!) Sounds like if you want powerful Vortec, you'd best go 6.0 from them. Little out of my budget, though, so I'm looking at other options. Another ('81) carbed 454 or carb the Vortec 454, smog it, register it, and then convert to injection as time and funds allow.

Still need crankcase ventilation and if the rig came with a bb it has to stay a bb from what I understand...

I don't know for sure but I can't imagine them failing a vehicle because the numbers didn't match... what would you do if you cracked a block? You'd have to stop driving it in cali forever.

Fuel injection is VERY expensive if your looking for power... I'm currently at 1200 into my fuel injection and I will be spending another 500 for a wideband 02 and ebl( http://www.dynamicefi.com/ <<< read up on this, very cool) but hopefully it'll be a beast... I plan on afr's street eliminator heads and somewhere around 430 hp and 500 ft lbs and CA smog legal with the right cam and tune. You'll need a programmer, a laptop, an aldl cable, and a maybe a Wideband o2. Really your not gonna get more than 475 hp out of a bored 454 tbi with larger injectors and high psi. If you can afford FI is the way to go but if you can't then stick with semi stock power where you won't have to modify everything. Yeah you could go carbed but FI is SOOO much better.
 
Not sure what you plan on doing with the truck in the end, but I've seen complete 12V cummins engines w/ NV4500's on em go for under $3000. If you're going to that much trouble, may want to go diesel.
 
I don't want a big, heavy, slow-shifting bread truck, I want a high-hp, no-lag gas motor and auto for sand and the occasional mud.
