57 Pontiac "Zero Fox"

25 years ago Kurt Cobain was killed, even though none of us knew it until April 8th. My wife and I were in Royal Columbian hospital, my wife was having our first child, born on the 8th. All we heard that day was about Kurt Cobain...

Looking back can make you dizzy. I think it's better to look forward and try to do some fun stuff along the way...

All right, been working on this old girl for most of the weekend. I kinda scabbed some radiator mounts onto it. I have a 6 cylinder rad support, and a V-8 rad which required some ****ery on my part. The good news is the rad holds water just fine. Check that one off the list. No water leaks on the engine either...yay!

Now the misery of my weekend. Fuel pump, not working. I swore I had it working but no bueno now. I got fed up and ordered a $22 clickety clack electric fuel pump off Amazon which will be here Tuesday.

I figured I'd at least get it to idle some, so I pulled the top of the carb off and filled the bowl. I gave it a splash and it fired up, and died after 5 or 6 seconds. I pump the gas to no avail. No pump shot. I have had the carb apart and on and off the car 17 million times, I now know it's circuits and how it is supposed to operate intimately. The accel pump, the tiny orifice was blocked, so I did get that fixed. However the idle circuit has me now stumped. I can follow exactly how and where vacuum is supposed to pull fuel and air, and I have verified no blockages or incorrect gaskets anywhere. With a full bowl it still only run on whatever you dump down the carb.

This carb has been thoroughly soaked and has had a kit installed by me three years ago. It's not some gunky POS.

I've had enough for this weekend. my hope is with the small electric pump it works more like it should...so until Tuesday I'm not gonna mess with it.

A few reasons. One, I want to build something fast. This could be fast, but I think it'd be a shame to modify this one. It really should be brought back to stock and left that way. Ideally I want to keep as much original paint as possible too.

Two, I have a tax debt I'm repaying. The sooner it's gone, the sooner I'll be able to move on with my life.

Three, related to reason one...I have committed to buying a 66 Fury from a friend. I don't have unlimited garage space.

running is good, running on it's own fuel system is better. Running and driving, again better. Running, driving, and stopping...pretty good. Running driving, stopping, insured and plated...gold. We'll see how far along I get. I'm mostly undoing 50 years of inertia and some collision damage.

We'll see. I'd like to but he doesn't work for free. If I can spring loose the money somehow then yes. He's quoted me $1500 to tidy up a few things and dust in the paint so it matches the original paint as best as possible. Will it sell for $1500 more all one color, I don't know.

What were you telling me was different on that '66 Fury?

Different? I dunno. It's a '66 Fury III "VIP". It's a 2 dr hardtop, came with a 318 Poly and 727. Engine is gone, trans is still there. Comes with a '68 383/727 combo. Comes with a 66 Fury III convertible parts car.

It was the VIP part. I remembered something was different

I'm ready for the Furry Fury...

I'm pretty sure the "VIP" part isn't Canada specific. I think it was also available in the US. It's just a trim level as far as I know.

It is furry inside, Dave Zimmerman and I rolled the glass up to try to keep the cats from sleeping in there anymore. Gonna take a huge lint roller and shop vac to get the cat hair out...

Bwahaha

So many jokes there...

Mucked with the electric fuel pump a little. Didn't get a lot of time out there though. Next step is remove the old school stone filter assembly and see if that is the big restriction in the system. I'd love to keep the glass bowl filter deal, but only if it works.

After the LQ9 left yesterday my work space got all messed up, shit scattered everywhere. That needs my attention as well.

Was that why you were looking to replace the carb?

Well the issue I'm having is it won't idle. Every passage in that carb is clear and clean, I can see how and where it should be drawing fuel at idle, and yet it does not draw fuel at idle. Beyond idle I can keep it running...

Even without a working fuel pump I can fill the bowl of the carb and without pumping the gas it won't run. So, I have been working on the premise of a "broken straw". Engine vacuum should create a draw at the tiny idle orifice where the mixture screw is under the throttle blade. I don't see an issue there. I cannot see anything in the entire path through the carb all the way to the main jet in the bowl where there might be an issue. It all looks exactly as it should. The caveat is this though: this carb suffered physical damage in the accident that took this car off the road. A hard enough hit to break the cast iron throttle base of the carb. I got another identical carb, but it was super gunky. I used the base off that one and tidied up the rest of mine.

I can splash some raw fuel into the top of the carb and it runs fine for as long as that lasts.

A rebuild I can get for about $150. I don't want to spend the money but I think I'm going to.

Well at least the $150 isn't a huge hit

Wonder if something got knock into a passage you can't see

Or a crack somewhere I can't see? Like I said, it's behaving like a broken straw.

Yeah, $150 isn't the end of the world.

But you're still gaining on it. I was sad to hear the Buick-ick was going away at first

But I'm better now
