64 Vette….Rebuild 2.0

Injection is nice, but I'd rather be blown....

So I got the Vette done enough for a drive today. Wanted to check out the three major components, and put a little break-in time on the rear diff.
I took it off the jackstands and backed out for a quick drive up the street.

It started getting hot even with the electric fan running, so I headed back home...now I only went about a 1/4 mile up the road....parked in the driveway, shut it off, and looked at the engine to figure why it was running so hot????
I had just Deionized water in it to make sure there was no leaks, then I was going to put antifreeze in it after a shakedown run. Well at one point in time, I drained the system pretty much to change a water pump fitting, then never filled it back up...duh.
I drained the system again in the driveway then filled it back up with 50/50...as I was admiring the sound of the beast, I walked around and thought I should check the lugnut torque again....uhh where's my lug nuts :eek1:...wtf, I guess I never tightened them down the first time:doah:

I was really lucky, 4 nuts gone, and the last one loose.....

And a little video idling:

It's tough to figure sometimes but when things don't go as we want, there is usually a GOOD reason for it.
Call it a God thing or good Karma coming back. Thankfully the engine was getting hot.

Damm, you got lucky on the lug nut deal. That motor sounds so healthy, I love that sound! Are you going to leave the pipes that way? They look frikkin sweet that way. My father has a 65 convertable w/ 327 and 4 speed and side pipes. Its so fun to drive! I love it, and it will be mine someday!! I have helped him do a lot of work on it!

Love your Vette!!!

Wow man...you're lucky today.

WELL, it was my birthday yesterday, hench the big push to get it done enough to drive...lucky? For sure. Thankful? you don't know how much!

My own neglect kept a disaster from happening. Maybe a double message to me from the all mighty to check my junk better before using it. I'm usually pretty good about that too.

I will run sidepipes again, this time with some muffler inserts in them. Although they sound absolutely cool, the roar of 4000rpm while going down the highway right in your ear, does get old after a while.
The sidepipes will be quickly removable though for racing it.

Thanks for the comps.

Took it for a 2nd drive yesterday for another heat cycle for the rearend gear break-in, had to adjust the trans shifter cable, so gear selection works now. I couldn't get high gear yesterday (reverse pattern manual valve body) Electric fan is working great, 100 amp alternator makes the lights nice and bright. Still need to work on the distributor though. It has mechanical advance only right now, which is limited to about 24* total, with about 12 of that initial. Just one more thing I need to take the time to get worked out. Adjusted the camber rods for the rear suspension too. They look pretty good for an eyeball alignment. Next spring I'll take it to the alignment shop for a 4 wheel.

tried to get a video while driving today, so so results:

Looks good man. Definitely West Michigan scenery.

Yeah, nothing like the downslope of fall. The pretty part is over and it's like winter bleakness only soggy and with wet leaves everywhere.

I new a guy that had a 63 427 4 gear, I got a ride in it . He took it to 150 mph.

Man that was cool! That was 20 years ago,and I still remember how it sounded.

Alot like yours! Very nice vet you built..TO BAD WINTER IS HERE.

Thanks....just curious about the BBC in a 63, what did they do with the frame where the balancer is. The 63-64 frames had no provision for a BBC length, and the 65+ had a scalloped crossmember where the balancer is.

Like this: look closely in front of the fan belt you can see where it is scalloped out for a BBC balancer and pulley setup.

:doah:Sorry Dave like I said it was 20 years ago. It was bugging me all day to get back here and tell you that I f`d up. NO 427`S IN 63! I know it was an origonal 427 car, and a roadster with sidepipes and knock offs, must have been a 66 or 67. All I know for sure is that it was sweet!

And so is yours!

No big deal Max, just curious is all. I've seen alot of 63-64 cars with a ugly hackjob on the front crossmember to get the BBC in there. My car needed frame replacement, hence I found a solid 65 frame for mine.
The BBC's started in 65 with the 396, and the 427's came in 66.
Sidepipes weren't available til 65, then you could get them with either SBC or BBC, and 2 sizes of pipes too! Almost all of these cars have undergone some changes in their life, so its hard to tell anymore whats what without Rock solid documentation.

Nice day out today, time for another drive!!!
