I completely get your plans for the big small block Zim, the rearend might live where it likely won't with a decent big block. Not only would it have more torque but it would also be more weight to push around with the same parts. Normally I'm all about big blocks, but I kind of understand in this situation, and I think a large small block would be great for your application.

Dart even sells 427 small block shortblocks ready to go, it's a proven combination with the right block.

That’s where the whole 427SB idea got ingrained in my brain, and after talking w a couple guys on Dragweek that run them, they sound like a very nice short block.
And totally agree with the aluminum head small block vs BBC argument. I’m hoping to not break stuff and will actually add a bracket and bar that if a half shaft breaks, the added bar will help the spindle maintain its position. Without it, only the spring keeps it in the position. The half shaft and spring act as upper and lower links to maintain alignment.

Yes, I never saw that post, but that is exactly what I was talking about.

I would get it with the 350 main bearing size if you do it. Then you don't have to potentially machine the oil pump shaft.
 
Gaining 24 mph from half to the end is decent! See your 60’ time improved!
 
If he can clip that 60’ a tenth or so, he has the mph. Anything gained at 60 usually gains 2x on the et
 
I’m pretty happy with this engine….
Small journal 2 bolt 327 block, TRW flat tops, double hump iron heads, .494/.515 net lift solid flat tappet, Edelbrock RPM airgap, Holley 750 vac secondary, hooker supercomp headers. It works pretty dam good for what it is.

This was the PCV system I disconnected for the strip….it was hooked to the base plate of the carb, drawing a small amount of vacuum on the crankcase. The hose I just pushed into the airgap area of the manifold, and plugged the baseplate opening. No noticeable amount of oil coming from that hose after a couple passes, but I think I’ll hook it back up for the street.
makes me wonder how much that PCV valve allowed for additional air to be sucked into the engine?
the valve cover breathers (one on each valve cover) are pushing a barely noticeable amount of smoke with that PCV blocked off. Not enough to see any oil mist, but just a wee bit of smoke.

Pretty good time for a very basic small block. Are they 2.02 or 1.96 intake valve heads?

They are 2.02/1.60 with some port and bowl work.

Rick the double humps were used on a lot of engines, and starting in 64 the solid lifter engines as well as some higher performance (I.e. 327/350) had 2.02’s as well, but many sets put on milder engines had 1.94/1.50 sets.
