Some of you know that my dad had passed away at the beginning of January unexpectedly.
Figured I’d make a thread about his 77 C20 Camper Special that I got the keys too. It’s not quite a build thread, more or less just a clean it up and get er going kinda thread.
Mom had bought the truck new in 78, Scottsdale 20 Camper Special. Truck has a 454/400 with 321 gears out back.
It was used as the main tow rig and work truck up until 2009 when dad bought a Duramax. It was semi retired after that, still hauling wood in the fall and being used for hauling hay and stuff around the acreage.
Truck is mostly original, had 1 repaint in 99/00 (same guy that sprayed my Beaumont). Front fenders were replaced with Chinese jobbers at the same time. Some trim was removed, truck was painted 1 solid color, cab lights and camper tie downs on the bedsides were shaved as well.
Truck has about 88000 miles, only thing mechanical touched to my knowledge was a brass float for the qjet, an rv cam was put in back in the mid 90s to replace a typical gm flat cam. Motor has some piston slap when cold, has been doing it since it was new fwiw.
Back in about 2011/12 he told me when I got my red seal ticket for machining I could have the truck if I wanted. Told him I wanted him to keep it till he was done enjoying it. Was also about the same time I put some thrush welded mufflers on it and new 2.25” tail pipes, he was more than thrilled with the new found rumble that came when you hit the key.
Over the years we put a push bar, diamond plate bedside trim, mudflaps and running boards.
The way it currently sits is the way it will stay for the most part.
Up on my to do list:
Change all fluids/filters, basic tune up and change some cooling hoses etc etc.
Replace the Silverado 10 fender emblems that the body guy put on with the original Scottsdale ones. Apparently find a grill emblem as it grew legs apparently which I just noticed tonight.
Needs new tires
Swap out the AM radio for a AM/FM one, which I think there may be one in his stock pile.
Make up some belly bars to put a truck camper back in as well.
Circa 1981 when they ran a truck camper and the old road runner horse trailer

Ice fishing in the late 80s

1995 when mom had bought a new 3 horse aluminum horse trailer(currently is still moms pride and joy)
