700r4 blowout thread *ITS DONE!* :)

YEP ITS FINALLY DONE!

I took off from work at about 4:15 and headed over to the transmission shop and I'll tell you what...these guys are amazing.
Some of the interesting stuff that they found and fixed along the way blew me away...
First up was my engine...besides finding out that it is a genII block with my older stuff put on he also found that one of my plug wires had fallen down and was burned through from my exhaust...so I have been running on 7 cylinders (which explains the weird backfires I've been getting for a little while) so he put a new plug wire on and it took care of the backfiring.
Next up was my TV cable....yeah no joke...it was in TWO PIECES...as in I didn't have a TV cable at all. :(
So they replaced it with a brand new TV cable. :)
Also the bracket that holds the tv cable was not even mounted properly and was moving all over the place so they fixed that as well.

So that was the new stuff. Other than that its amazing...this truck is like a whole new animal now. It has a brand spankin' new 2nd generation 700r4, new lower stall torque converter (and he said that they wired it so that when it goes into OD it automatically goes to full lock so it reduces the heat).
He mentioned something else about the old tranny; which btw we found out that it wasn't a 2nd gen after he pulled it and looked at the case...I can't remember...but it had to do with the lock up mechanism on my old tranny that he said wasn't working so it was building up a lot of extra heat.
They hooked up the tranny cooler and its working like a champ as well.
Ok...onto the transfer case...he called me and I gave him the ok to go ahead and work on it as long as they had it out...so they took it apart, inspected everything, replaced the seals and resealed the two halves together again so now I have absolutely no drips at all. By fixing the leaking transfercase and replacing that rear main this truck is perfect now.
Finally the new rear d-shaft went in...this thing makes my old shaft look like a toothpick. So now it has all the same size u-joints so I don't have to use that stupid conversion joint and best of all, its finally the correct length so my slip yoke isn't being pulled out like it was before.

The truck is a blast to drive now and he was actually surprised by the gearing...at first he said to keep in out of OD but after his afternoon of test driving he said that its actually about perfect and that he would recommend 4.56's instead of 5.13's if I'm going to stick with these tires. They measure out to 37" so 4.56's, 37's and the low 1st gear and OD would be about perfect.

He said just drive like normal for now and before I got to texas (in a couple months) just bring it back and he'll drop the pan and inspect everything before I go. So this'll give me a couple months to put some miles on it and make sure all the bugs are worked out. :)

I'm so happy!

For a 14bff from CCOR.

Gears $151, master install kit $101, detroit locker $399, shipping $40, I'm a good bit closer so shipping might be a bit more but it's still pretty good prices I think...

but I didn't ask name brands.... hmm.

Avery,

I am so very happy for you. I'm glad this all worked out for you. I don't know how you do it, but you managed over 5300 hits with 261 posts. How you got there I don't know, but I'd like to know your secret. I'd have over 100,000 on mine if I had your secret!

Take it easy on the truck for awhile. Enjoy some nice cruises and get yourself down here so we can go bury that thing in 30" of Texas' finest MUD!

Manny

lol I don't think there are any secrets other than my threads turn entertaining pretty quickly...it just happens :)

I took it for a nice drive tonight and although he said I could put it in OD I don't think that I am going to...I had a nice long stretch of highway and put it down into OD and it worked like a charm but it just didn't feel like I had the power...or I guess its that I'm out of the power band so for now I'll stick to 3rd...which honestly is plenty fast enough for a truck this size.
Its soooo nice not having to mess with the throttle while driving to try and make it shift...just roll into the throttle and the tranny does the rest...it has nice solid shifts that feel very crisp which sure makes driving more enjoyable.

So I guess next on the list as far as big stuff goes is getting 4.56's/4.88's put in but I'll play it by ear and figure out which route I want to go with.

Oh I almost forgot...now that the drivetrain is all buttoned up (I'll get pics just for kicks tomorrow and post them up) I'm noticing that when I get into the throttle from a stop (not punching it...just normal rolling into it) it hesitates for like 1/2 a second...maybe less and then it takes off.
The guy at the tranny shop highly recommended a tune up as soon as I can...he said new plugs, wires and a carb tune would really help the truck out.
Is a hesitation something that can normally be fixed by a tune up or is it too hard to tell w/o seeing the truck?

good to hear you got your truck back.

Are you saying you have a gen II block based only on the rear main seal because I believe (someone correct me if I’m wrong) 87-96 trucks have a one piece rear main seal but were still gen I blocks. Gen IIs are Lt motors found in cars.
just trying to make sure you have your info right.

Pretty tough to tell without actually seeing the truck, but I imagine a tune-up will probally take care of it :)

Sounds like you've pretty much got all of the jerry riggin' fixed properly :D Glad to hear things are going your way! I've personally been fighting with changing my K5's tranny out, and have certainly not enjoyed my self thus far, lol

maybe you should consider a shop :) *gasp*....I know its no the ck5 way but still...sometimes a couple hundred dollars is well worth it in my opinion.
Plus this has a 12 month 12,000 mile warranty and a free service before I go to texas so if something goes wrong from now until then he'll take care of it.

Colby T: iono for sure thats what I heard him mention...so it may not be a "genII" block but it does have a one piece rear main so its at least '87 or newer.
Is there a block number...or some sort of identification on the sb350's that I can look at to know for sure?

Aren't GM crate motors one piece now? At least the bare bones 350? It could explain a couple of things. I might be talking out the wrong end, but I'm too tired to worry about looking right now.

Good to hear about your tranny Avery, but what happened to 5.13's? I'm presently only running 37's (not sure what they actually measure out to be) but that's definately the gears I'm going with...

Well after getting the drivetrain all tightened up he said that 5.13's are really just going to be too low. He said that 4.56's would be a better option, especially because I'm on the street so much.

Yes, your guy built the transmission and does this for a living. But there are so many here that have/and are telling you to go with 5.13's. You will not regret your choice.

The majority is telling you 5.13's. Maybe for a reason.... ;)

x2. what size tire do u plan to run next time? i ran 39.5 iroks, which measured out to ~38.5 and the 5.13s were perfect. for right now if it not that great keep it in drive not overdrive, unless the rpms are high enough where od is necessary. you wont regret 5.13s trust me, i started out with 4.10s as well.....

Yeah I'm sure he knows his stuff, but how many trucks does he own with 38"-40" tires that he DD's? Most the guys here do...

just to keep the thread alive. I have a 90 motor that I am running a carb on. the one piece rear main seal and better sealing valve covers are nice to have. The heads have bigger valves IIRC. do you have centerbolt valve covers?

Is everyone giving their opinions running a 700r4? He got a new torque convertor too right?

I run a 700R4 with 37 MTRs and 4.10s and it is a dog. The overall RPM difference between 4.10 and 4.56/4.88s are not worth the money IN MY OPINION.

I used this calculator to figure out all of my stuff it is the best one I have found.

http://www.florida4x4.com/tech/gearcalc.php

In our rigs using first gear to determine your rear end ratio is rather backwards. You are in first for only about 20 seconds. However you are in 3rd or 4th 99 percent of the time (especially with the type of driving you do Avery). With 5.13s and 37s at 75 (as your tires measure) you would turn 2446. That is right in the power band for a 350. Drop your speed to 65 and you turn 2120.

If you go with 4.88s or 4.56s it will be sub 1800 and a dog and you will have a hard time keeping the converter locked and in OD.

Once again just my opinion. I am sure you will do the opposite of what everyone suggests.

I can't wait till Avery moves to Texas... he'll be within backhanding distance of big brother Manny. :haha:

Disclaimer: I've never been a part of the bash Avery club and nor do I ever intend on paying the dues to join... all in fun Avery.

:haha:I would never hit him! I like Avery too much. He makes me laugh. But when he gets to Texas, if he decides to put 4.56's in that truck, which I
HIGHLY
RECOMMEND HE
DOESN'T,

(HINT, HINT, HINT)

then I will be forced to take corrective measures when his ass gets stuck in the MUD! Ever have a

MUD BATH

before Avery?

Can I say this loud enough:

5.13's!

yep, my experience is from 350tbi/700r4/208 5.13s and 39.5's (measure 38.5);)
