72 burb (this is why i can't go to salvage yards)

While I have some other crap going on I located a set of 16" wheels that I think will accept the stock hubcaps. I'm debating painting or sending them to powder coat. Since my truck is trimmed with white, the wheels will be white. I wanted the 16" wheels as all of the decent skinny tall tires need a 16 wheel. My tire guy wasn't able to find anything for me in 15 or I would have ran a rally wheel on the suburban. Since I am changing it over to 8lug that also presents a couple issues. Once the small block is out and I can clean up the engine bay I will switch gears a little to interior and body stuff while parts ordered come in and machine work is done on the diesel block. Had two boxes of parts come in today with more arriving shortly.

Just wheeled the 14 bolt that will reside in the back of the suburban around to inspect it one more time. 3.73 gears made in 5 of 72....coincidence? Maybe not. I have had this 14 bolt for quite a while waiting on a project.

Is it wrong that all I want to do is hear that old 8 track player work? I'm seriously considering keeping a battery and charger on the truck just to listen to some 8 track tapes instead of the radio. One problem.....I don't have any 8 track tapes to play. HA! I need some rock and roll coming out of that thing.

Here is the donor suburban. 84 half ton 6.2 diesel, 400 turbo transmission and np208 transfer case. It really looks like crap on the outside from a life up north in the salt. However, it's a one owner with 175k original miles and an aftermarket turbo kit. Truck belonged to a couple of old dirt hippies that converted it to run on waste veggie oil! Good side is the engine is really nice. Reman injectors, new injector pump and lots of other goodies that I can use on my truck. The turbo kit, pump and injectors are listed for sale here. I also listed a part out for the other stuff I don't plan on using.

They equipped it with a fuel tank heater, heated fuel lines and backup fuel pump. All good stuff for me.

A 1/2-ton diesel with a factory TH400? Didn't know that was possible, the TH400 vacuum modulator occupies the same spot as the TPS that the C-code emissions engines got. :dunno:

You know, now that you mentioned it.....I took the owners word it was a 400 and 208. I never even looked. Guess I should do that huh....

Looking at this picture:

You don't have the vacuum modulator there on the left side of the IP. So I don't think you can have a 3-speed in that truck. Here's what a TH400 truck should have:

Not really. The other stuff was recent work. I don't think the rest of the truck has ever been touched. Pretty sure it has never been out of the truck. I'm fairly certain he was guessing and I never bothered to look.

So next I will start the tear down of the parts burban to get everything moving in the directions that they need to go. Trans to the tranny shop, engine in my shop for tear down. I've been thinking about this Dana 20 case and PTO setup. I am pretty sure I can hide it behind the front bumper and not have the huge bracket that usually comes with them. Removing the factory cross member in front of the engine mounts and building a new one. That would be the rear support for the winch then build a front mount behind the bumper. Would be a slick setup with a really rare piece of kit. I am liking it the more I think about it.

Got a email sent into advance adapter regarding adapting the 700r4 to the Dana 20. The Dana 20 was behind a GM turbo 400 so it should have a 27 spline input. I am pretty sure I will need to replace the output shaft on the transmission and find an adapter that will couple them. The transmission currently has a np208 mated to it and I think it is the same pattern as the Dana 20, 6 bolt round. So I guess we will see what it takes to get them together. That's sort of the problem when working with rare obsolete stuff. There isn't common, known fixes. For what I am doing with the truck this setup will be plenty strong. I don't hardcore wheel anymore, although it will see the occasional towing job. Using the overdrive will get me a final drive rpm of about 1800 rpm at 70 mph. Which is normally a good thing but it's slightly low in the power band for a 6.2. As long as I can build good boost pressure down low like that it should be a beast. If I can't then I will keep working it until I can. Just another little hurdle in the way of making a custom build.

Got my stuff in from DIY4X this morning and once again they knock it out of the park. I've bought a ton of stuff from these yahoos over the years and everytime my box comes with extras and goodies. This time p-dog targets and stickers. Call me superficial and childish but I look forward to opening boxes from them. There's just no telling what little surprises are gonna be inside. Even my girlfriend, who is one hell of a shot under my tutiledge, even let out a little squee noise. Besides hunting elk, deer and bear her favorite thing to do is plaster p-dogs at a 1000 yards. Yes, my girlfriend is better than yours......HA!

Went to the salvage yard I bought the suburban from and wow things have changed. They are crushing cars at a rapid rate. Owners main guy told me today that they are closing up in June. They were the only salvage yard in town that would let me just wonder around the property and pick my own stuff. Then make decent deals on them. Went over today to pick up some spindles and backing plates for an 8 lug swap on the burb. Owner pipes up and says, if you want those parts you'll have to buy the whole front axle on the only truck left in the yard with the parts I need. 600 bucks for the axle. Yeah, no thanks. Looks like another good old business is down the tubes.
