72 burb (this is why i can't go to salvage yards)

I know right? He is hell bent to crush everything in that place. I saw a crew cab square body that was really nice. I half went back today to look at it again as a future project. Nothing special really it was just a clean body crew cab. Mashed flat...

Nooooo.....I hate it when places like salvage yards and tow companies crush perfectly good projects just cuz they can get scrap money for it. It was bad yrs ago when scrap paid real good. Everything was getting crushed.

This Place does service and mechanical work as well as the salvage parts. As of June 1 they will no longer have any used parts they are crushing the entire lot.

That's too bad. There's only 2 yards like this left around here, and they are some high priced mofo's.

Stripping the donor suburban today finally. Got everything laid back in the engine bay, most of the interior taken out and some parts for other folks rounded up and packaged. This is the part of a build that I hate the most. Figuring what parts to order in what sequence. You can't do this until you have this....sort of thing. The engine in this truck will be used to mock up the headers and turbo locations on the 72. That is the most critical figment issue with the entire truck. So while it won't be staying in there, I am planning to pull the engine and trans as an assembly and set them in place while I work on exhaust manifolds. I ordered the flanges and a header bend kit, I hope it will be enough tubing for the large amount of screw ups I plan to make. I will only be fitting it and tacking it together. Then I will be handing it off to a good friend to tig weld it all for me. I can do it here but y tig welding doesn't hold a candle to his. Then we will buff it all up and send it out to be coated.

As I take this engine apart I am making mental notes of clearances and distances inside the engine bay of the 84. I'm not sure but I think the 72 has more room under the hood. It just doesn't seem as tight to me. Bought a case of engine degreaser....not sure it will be enough to get the old 6.2 clean.

I used simple green in a spray bottle to clean up my 4.0. took some time but with a brush and a garden hose and the stuff actually took some of the paint off the block. I probably should've diluted it more

This is some stuff that was on sale at the parts house. " gunk gel formula" it sticks to the block and dissolves it like oven cleaner. So far I put a can on it yesterday and let it sit for an hour, went back out and hit it with a hose and it did a fair job. It was 2.99 for a big spray can and the sale was buy one get one free....so I can't really complain about its effectiveness.

I just want the big grime off the outside for now. To keep things relatively clean until I can get it into the shop. I do all of this dirty work on the dirt gravel driveway to keep it out of my shop. I have very little space and I don't need that space greasy grimey.

While I am thinking about it here is the Dana 20 setup with the PTO and factory Ramsey winch. This will e installed after a once over for new gaskets and seals. I will twin stick the case while I am in there and add a third stick to the mix for PTO engagement. Should be sort of freaky cool.

So here is a small dilemma I would like a little input on. I have been searching for stock 3/4 ton steel wheels for the dog dish hub caps to no avail. I have looked in all of my little honey hole places and not found any. The guy that I got the Dana 20 and PTO setup from is a 68-72 collector. He had a set of custom boyd coddington wheels made about 25 years ago for a 3/4 ton Chevy. He claims they are the only ones like it. Sitting on a shelf at his place for the last ten years in the box. They don't look like anything special to me but they are billet aluminum. Opinions?

I have one more place to check and the I got nothing on OE wheels. I can find all kinds of stock GM wheels but none with that smaller diameter ring to use the original dog dish cap. I never thought they would be that hard to find honestly but I'm striking out. Those wheels above are 17" also... Yeah very 90's esque. They are nice wheels and with a little elbow grease would shine like new money. I can get them cheap from him but I would still rather have the steel wheels. I really want a 16" wheel to use an updated tire with a higher load rating.
