2010.10.23 - UPDATE! - MORE TIRES & PORTAL PROGRESS...

It was getting silly trying to set my axle track widths with only a single tire, so I bit the bullet and bought the remaining four that I will eventually need.

I still needed to resolve the issues I'd created with the first re-assembled portal box, so I pulled it back apart and inspected the splines on both parts.... (those grooves up the middle of the wider splines are NOT supposed to be there!) Those were chiseled into the part by a sharp leading edge of the large lower gear splines.

Here's the damage on the opposite part... You can more easily see those narrow splines and the very sharp initial edge that gouged the hub in the previous photo. You can also see some "curls" of metal in the anti-seize paste a little further down.

After some polishing of all the sharp leading edges and gentle radiusing of all the edges I finally got it looking more like this:

The assembly went much smoother after that and I was able to finally get the portal loaded into the back of one of my new wheel/tire combos... Here's a shot with the portal, the 1" spacer and no rotor (yet). With the rotor installed, there is a chance that I won't even need to use the spacer to get the clearance around the wheel. It will depend on how large the caliper is too, I'm sure....

Here's a shot under the rear of the truck to show how far the portal encroaches on the links and shock area.....it ended up being a lot more compact and "tucked in" than I'd expected. Obviously, I will need to cut the axletubes down to get the wheel stuffed under the wheelwells a few more inches. However in this shot it's clear that I've got almost 12" of axletube between the current link mounts, and the back of the portal so it looks like there is still plenty of room to work with! :woot:

One more shot from across the underside of the truck. It's not bolted in or anything....mainly just taking a look to see what I've got so far.

That's all the progress for today.... next update will probably be late Monday night.

Looks like it'll be pretty cool. How does the axle tube attach to the portal assembly? I'm guessing you need to weld on a bolting flange on the end of the tube?

Thanks guys! :D

The axletube is about 1" too high in that photo, so the bearing race you see there actually lines up with the tube. I still need to replicate the factory Unimog mounting plate (either by machining a new one from scratch or milling the old ones with a 3.5" centerhole) to match the new axletube size.

I agree, that photo really shows off the reasons why portals are so cool....it's obvious that the wheel center and axletube center are no longer in alignment, and there is a LOT more under-axle clearance than with a conventional axle setup. I forget the exact amount but I think the clearance underneath with 38's will be at least as good as a set of 44's on a regular 1-Ton axle.

:usaflag:

how much tube are ya gonna be able to cut out on each?

Paul,

I think I'll be able to cut whatever is necessary to make the tire fit the way I want. There's about 12" between the portal backing plate and the upper link bracketry now.

Here's a shot from a while ago with 2" of tire stickout. This is about as wide as I want to go.

Compared to yesterday's shots (The tire is 14" wide, so it looks like about 7" of stickout presently):

So basically, even though I could cut up to 12" out of the axletube I will probably end up where I want it with only about 5 inches removed.

Measure twice....maybe more, and cut once!! :deal:

:usaflag:

Looks great Greg! I still love the shot with the 5 gal bucket sitting under the Diff! :eek1::eek1:

I am assuming you have to have custom shafts make for whatever length you end up with on the tubes?

Yep.... all custom shafts. Mog 404 at one end, 31-spline Ford 9" on the other.

Since they are going to be custom anyway, I might as well make the lengths EXACTLY the way I want. It's not like I can reuse the originals anyway.

:usaflag:

Glad to see your rig is still moving along very well Greg. Bad ass parts ya got going into this build.

Why only 31 spline? Ford rears came in 28, 31, and 33 spline factory. If you go aftermarket on a locker then you can go 35 or 40 spline as well.

I'm using an ARB locker, and the 35-spline version (RD99) is garbage. WAAAY to many problems with the locking collar. AFAIK, ARB doesn't make a 40-spline locker. (or a 33 spline).

With the portals, I've got only HALF the stresses on those inner shafts compared to a conventional axle. A 31-spline shaft should be more than adequate....however, if the aftermarket comes up with a valid fix for the RD99 by the time I'm ready to buy my 3rd members, I'd be willing to consider a move to 35-spline.

Actually, i'm a middle man helping Greg with some CNC'd mog parts so he can continue with the axle portion of this build.

Long distance work....I know he trusts you Scott.
I was thinking he still has some house work to finish too.

I have completed the installation of a complete new whole-house HVAC system (ductwork, returns, air handler, electronic dampers, etc).....works killer! :waytogo:

Still on the list is moving my home office to a new location to get the nursery painted & prepped..... currently in process.

The massive Ford calipers and rotors (1 set) arrived from UPS last night, I'll try to find some time to open the boxes and snap photos today.

Scott is helping to design and build some Spidertrax to Unimog adapter plates so that I can finally cut the axletubes down to length and bolt the portals onto the axles permanently......

Progress is everywhere, but it takes on many forms these days! :yikes:

:usaflag:

I can relate Greg, I'll bet the house will be just as awesome when finished, and keep the view tax down will ya.:D

2010.11.18 - UPDATE! - UNCANNY.....AND IMPRESSIVE!

I haven't had much time to play in the shop, but I at least wanted to post up the photos of the new Ford brake parts for the Unimog 8-lug conversion.

This stuff is pretty large and impressive looking in-person. I threw a soda can into the photos to add some perspective... the rotors are 13" across and almost 1.25" thick!! :waytogo:
