House projects seem to be the theme of the summer. My work on the truck is at a virtual standstill.

Surely you guys took pics of the hoops. ;)

Got a few pics of the hoops, the day ran short and we were unable to totally finish but the all the necessary bending was completed.

Never even broke a sweat all day...us OR the bender. :D

Those really look sweet!! What size tube did you use?
What's up with the holes in the frame?

Exhaust cooling ports....it's all the rage these days. :D

Actually, they are the end-result of a well-used Ford shock tower setup.... leverage is a bitch sometimes.

oh yeah, 1.75" DOM

:usaflag:

Are both front shocks the same length or will they need to be different since the mounting tabs are positioned differently? Looking great my friend.

The lower axle-side shock mounts were in different spots, so the top mounts couldn't be symmetrical. IIRC we set up both sides to have 5" of uptravel, and the rest was left for droop...

:usaflag:

Very nice....I've been trying to decide if I really wanted to put the F*rd towers back on. Hmmmm.....

After seeing that I"m going run some hoops.. If it wasn't for the cross member I bet it would have folded.

2009.06.17 - UPDATE! - IT AIN'T SEXY...BUT THIS AIN'T A TELEVISION 4X4 SHOW...

My "reality" is a little different from those TV shows. I don't build a truck in 7 days, and I don't have the luxury of getting paid for spending time in the garage... I wish. :wink1:

As my real life took over these last few weeks, the man space has fallen into disrepair, and chaos...

DSC01596.jpg

Some of that stuff has no place in the manspace...(ie. Peat Moss, garden tools, wood scraps) but even so, as I acquire more parts for this build, I'm finding less and less useful space to store things that belong.

I spent the last couple days on a mudane task, but one that should help me stay organized as I start the next big "push" on this build..... more shelves! :saweet:

Since I was out of room on the left side of the shop, I had no choice but to find some space on the right. Here's what I ended up with as of tonight:

DSC01594.jpg

This will allow me to store my tall items away from the build-area on the opposite side of the shop... I've got tons of rattlecans of paint, solvents and other things that were just cluttering up my benches. Now I think there is space for everything.

DSC01595.jpg

Astute viewers will notice that two of the shelves are substantially deeper than the others with some extra bracing.... one is for my "manspace microwave" and the other is for my Apple HiFi Ipod boombox (one of the most enjoyable gifts I've ever received). Having hot coffee, hot pizza slices and some good, loud rock-n-roll are every bit as important as a 4-1/2" grinder and a 220V welder IMHO... :D

Finally, after almost 6 weeks away..... it is time to get back in the shop, get it organized and get back to the business of getting the "Optimus Prime K5" closer to completion.

Sorry for the lame update, but this is my reality.....not SpikeTV reality.

:deal:

did you make a jig this time? or are you still clamping as you go?

i'm glad you're back in the shop!

The manspace is turning out great, Greg! Really digging the shelving, wish I had a garage of my own! I will have to agree about the music, DEFINITELY helps me!

did i miss something, but what axels are those?
I don't know much about them, but think I've seen them before elsewhere. Are those unimogs?

DFS,

As you might have noticed in the photos, I have a tablesaw now....it was finally time to buy a dado set too, and that made the cuts SO much easier (and faster) than last time with the router and 3/4" bit.

C305,

Those are the Mog 404 axles. I've had them forever and I'll be using them as donors to build a set of Mog-9 portals (Ford 9" centersection / Mog outers)......someday.

:usaflag:

It's about time you got back after it!:D I would take your newly redecorated manspace over my driveway any day. What's next on the agenda?

Well, I'd better get back to my 502 installation.....somebody around here's been making me look bad! :haha:

Actually, the 502 really is the next step. I bought a ton of new paints to get all the accessory pulleys and brackets painted along with the block itself. I need to get that stuff installed to establish the front dimension of the engine (for clearance). Then I need to ching-up and buy the aluminum radiator and electric fan setup so that I can create a new radiator support (approx 3" further back than stock). Once that is done, I will have all of the constraints in place and can finally start bending up some chassis tubing for the front clip area... that will allow me to finally hang my front clip back on and get this truck looking more truck-like.

Yes, fun times are ahead... :saweet:

:usaflag:

I honestly think that Mr. brand new ramjet 502 has started an awakening of sorts around here. I have finaly beat through home and landscape projects and got time off to get back to work also.

Glad to see you getting back at it.

What are you using for pulleys, did you buy a serpentine setup?

Nope. I'm going with the conventional v-belts on this one.

I was trying to look at the casting #'s on your water pump in the photo to see if I could make out the numbers. Really to confirm my own waterpump was correct... if you're going serpentine (which is sounds like you are) then the water pump will be reverse rotation anyway, so I can't steal your part numbers!

Even though everyone here knows I'm running a 502, there's no reason to "advertise" it to the rest of the world IMHO. I'm going to paint it up with a factory orange, and give many of the outward appearances of a plain 'ol 396. I'll be using as much factory-looking stuff as I can....though a set of 2" tubular headers will partially give it away, I suppose.

The part numbers for the water pump is either:

3975928 or 8975928

I will probably end up going v-belt also as I already have a water pump, steering pump, york compressor for air and alternator. The v-belt setups are much more affordable too if you already have your own accessories.

Does your motor have aluminum heads and if so are you painting those as well?
