2010.09.20 - UPDATE! - BACK TOGETHER NOW....
The rear suspension is far enough along that I decided to take the tub off of it's roller cart, and put it back onto the frame. Having them separated was convenient for a while, but it made it really hard to move around the shop and wasted a lot of space.
Since I still need to mess around with custom body mounts, I didn't want to drop the body all the way down yet, so it's sitting on 2" aluminum spacers for the time being... once I get the mounts sorted out, it will sit lower and look a little less "up there"...
One of the things I have to deal with before too much longer is setting up the axle widths and cutting down the Spidertrax housings to match. I hadn't ever put the KM2 into the wheel well to see how it would look, so tonight seemed like a good time to try it.
Once I drop the body the final 2", clearances in those fenderwells are going to get REALLY tight.... some cutting and finessing of the wheel arches will be inevitable.
I played around with a few different track widths to see what "looked" right. The tire has a measured section width of 13.5" at the widest point, and after a few trials that looked too wide and goofy, I settled on this one. The tire sticks out 2" from the outermost edge of the fenderlip. It's not techincally "legal" but hopefully it's conservative enough that only the most uptight state troopers will bother to hassle me about it.
Here's how it looks from the rear... I think it's a good compromise between stability (wide track width), street legality, and aesthetics. In this shot the frame height and rear axle are set at ACTUAL "real world" height (only the body is out of position). Check out that clearance under the diff!!! A 5 Gal pail's worth....plus another 6" more!!!
That's all for tonight....
