Congrats on the Boy that's awesome. Our little girl just turned 19 months and its been great spending time with her.

Still haven't talked the wife into letting me throw the car seat in the blazer but I wont give up.

Awesome news Greg!!! :waytogo:

I'm somewhat amazed you had the time or energy left over to make a kid though...

Rene

Well Greg,
All I can say is congrats and maybe you should wait till 2012.
I went to BB2006 with my 10 month old girl if you remember, it was a great trip but if she was any younger it wouldn't have been possible.
Yours I believe will be a few months old.
As for time, you thought now you don't have time enough, wait till you have the kid.
the first few years, between work and spending some time with the wife and kid, I didn't even have time to stop here to post.
I now have a few moments from time to time if you notice my frequency here. :) But still no time to work on my blazer.

X2 above. Having a kid makes everything take 3 times as long, wrenching, driving, etc. And when your wife is struggling to stay sane inside the house with a little kid getting into everything, being in the garage is frowned upon. ;)

Congrats!

AWESOME Greg...a whole new world awaits my friend. It is truly a blessing when you both want that child...
And if the wife plans on coming to BB, skip 11 and come to 12....a 1 yr old is much easier to deal with than a newborn on a trip across the country.

Just to be nosy, are you far enough along to have seen that it's a boy? We thought we were having a boy and come to find out it was a part of the umbilical. With that said I have two killllller daughters and wouldn't trade them to save my own life. Congrats! and enjoy whatever you hatch.

Joe

We had the amnio done which makes it a 100% certainty.

Seeing the baby move during the last ultrasound and finding out the sex of the baby really makes it feel more "real" somehow. It also ratcheted up the pressure to get the nursery finished and about a million other things related to getting the "nest" ready.

Good times. I can't wait.... :D

2010.09.20 - UPDATE! - BACK TOGETHER NOW....

The rear suspension is far enough along that I decided to take the tub off of it's roller cart, and put it back onto the frame. Having them separated was convenient for a while, but it made it really hard to move around the shop and wasted a lot of space.

Since I still need to mess around with custom body mounts, I didn't want to drop the body all the way down yet, so it's sitting on 2" aluminum spacers for the time being... once I get the mounts sorted out, it will sit lower and look a little less "up there"... :D

One of the things I have to deal with before too much longer is setting up the axle widths and cutting down the Spidertrax housings to match. I hadn't ever put the KM2 into the wheel well to see how it would look, so tonight seemed like a good time to try it.

Once I drop the body the final 2", clearances in those fenderwells are going to get REALLY tight.... some cutting and finessing of the wheel arches will be inevitable.

I played around with a few different track widths to see what "looked" right. The tire has a measured section width of 13.5" at the widest point, and after a few trials that looked too wide and goofy, I settled on this one. The tire sticks out 2" from the outermost edge of the fenderlip. It's not techincally "legal" but hopefully it's conservative enough that only the most uptight state troopers will bother to hassle me about it.

Here's how it looks from the rear... I think it's a good compromise between stability (wide track width), street legality, and aesthetics. In this shot the frame height and rear axle are set at ACTUAL "real world" height (only the body is out of position). Check out that clearance under the diff!!! A 5 Gal pail's worth....plus another 6" more!!! :thumb:

That's all for tonight....

Greg, what is the wall thickness of the axle housings?

Everything is looking killer by the way:waytogo:

3.5" OD, .250" wall thickness...

It will be an interesting day of wheeling when I can actually get a rock to reach up to those axletubes.... :D

:usaflag:

Does the .250" worry you at all? What were the options avalable when you ordered the housings? The only reason I ask is my old D44HD had .500" wall tubes...which I thought was burly for a factory D44. For aftermarket I sort of expected a bit more wall thickness. :dunno:

Rene

Rene,

Spidertrax only has three options:

3" O.D., .250" wall
3" O.D., .375" wall
3.5" O.D., .250" wall

The larger diameter tube does increase strength quite substantially, though I believe the .375" wall 3" O.D. ends up being slightly stronger overall.

I was planning to truss the housing once I figure out where to buy an alignment bar (to prevent warpage). Between the truss and the large link and coilover mount bracketry, and the fact that the housings are going to be pretty narrow to fit the portal housings I don't feel that it's going to be an issue.

Of course, if I do bend one of these housings during BlazerBash 2018  I can always order up a custom-made replacement with thicker-walled tubes!
