Clean parts are a lot more fun to work with...... :saweet:

Welcome to Page 15.

every time i see pics from you Greg, I always feel like an unorganized hack... :doah::haha:

nice "resto" on that trunion, i can appreciate the effort, and materials as mentioned, it takes to do that stuff... hate to think of my consumable total dollar at this point in my build... :doah:

Paul,

While I've got your ear for a second, tell me more about the thickness of the zinc layer you use....

In Mike's build thread you mentioned that you spray almost a "mist" coat of zinc and then follow with the final color. In some of your build photos when I study the zinc it looks like you coat completely but it is still possible to see "through" the paint a little bit to the base metal (semi-opaque).

When I'm doing my painting with the zinc, I hit it lightly and let it tack up but then I hit it a second time and the color gets pretty much solid (opaque) green. I have a feeling I might be going a little too heavy on the zinc based on some of your recent comments. Should I be taking it a little easier on the trigger from now on? :dunno:

the rattlecans are a little misleading.... they actually cover really well... anything you see of mine thats gonna be sitting around awhile gets about 3 coats.. no transparency, full cover... but i do also plan to remove a bit with a thorough scuff....

when i'm doing something the "correct" way, and overcoating the zinc after it flashes off with either hi-build or paint, i do 2 light to medium coats.. and yes, you can often see thru it somewhat, but not always.. BUT don't sweat it if it's solid green.. the cans have a tendency to do that, whereas a sprayed, 2 part zinc wash tends to stay more translucent...

the only reason i mentioned the engine part was really just a reminder of it's intended purpose and that in a high heat situation, i've always felt it best to keep it on the thin side... tho to tell ya the truth i've never had it fail when it was "loaded on" on an engine.. i just feel it's a safer approach...

now, body part's, etc i wouldn't worry about it at all, as a matter of fact, i like to load it up to protect from moisture... but always keep it in mind and try to give it a thorough scuff in those circumstances to remove a few mils...

hope that kinda, sorta makes sense.... :screwy:  :doah: :haha:

Great Build thread! I got a Quincy awhile back. How do you like yours?

I need to get motivated on my Suburban!

my Quincy kills it... was sandblasting today and it chuckled the whole time.... more air than i'll ever need.. in a couple weeks i'm gonna build it it's very own room... ;)

I love your truck too!

Yeah, sandblasting and soda blasting with mine is a joke! Love it!

What Media Blaster do you guys have?

i just run a cheapie HF pressurized 20lb sandblaster... works damn good for $60

I'd sell small children for a glassbead cabinet these days... need to look into a cheap way to do that... sorry for the hijack Greg! :o

tptools has a cheap kit to build your own. Get one of their catalogs and take a look at everything. It will give you TONS of ideas.

The one I have, the 780TL, with the soda attachment and wheels, etc.... was fairly cheap when I got it a few years back........

-10F really kills my motivation! :yikes:

It was too cold to do much, and I don't like using rattlecans with the doors shut..... so this is all the progress I could muster before throwing in the towel yesterday.

Thats gonna look T!TS when its put together.

What temp/ windchill was MT. Washington Sunday Greg?

Zim,

No idea about mt washington temps... I got my own problems, those guys are on their own! :D

JD,

Surprisingly, the parts are pretty easy to find for the Unimog stuff. I have been calling Expedition Imports in Vallejo, CA.... Those guys have a huge inventory of NOS parts and always seem to have the odd stuff I ask them for. Later this week i should have a complete new set of small seals and some new zerks too. That will allow me to start the reassembly of those CV's and the front knuckles and portals.

Speaking of zerks, is there such a thing as a "metric" grease fitting? I'm wondering if my grease gun will work on these also (they seem a tad smaller than the ones on normal Chevy stuff).

:usaflag:

Metric grease fittings. You bet, we got them all over the place.

All our tractors are Massey Fergusons, built in France, your gun will work just fine.

Kind of sucks because half of are stuff is metric and the rest standard.

I guess everything is getting to be that way.

I have never posted on your thread before, but gotta say your build is the single most radical thing I could imagine.I watch what you do and enjoy it! Not much to say, it`s over my head sweet.

My wife and I are still at the hospital, we're taking advantage of all the extra helping hands for as long as we can, but I wanted to at least get a quick photo out for everyone.

Mom's healthy, "Danger" is healthy....and life is good. I can't even begin to describe the feelings...
