Hey Brian,

Not sure if you remember several years ago when I first came up with this idea. The design was just a set of sleeved tubes at all 5 locations. Everyone (rightly) was concerned about the alignment...since it would have to be perfect for the slider to ever be removed (or installed) and if the outer slider tubing was dented or damaged on a trail ride it would trap the slider in those sleeves forever... or it would have to all be cut out with a SawZall to make repairs. :yikes:

The concept of the taper is that it will tolerate slight misalignment across those 5 mounting points. As you start running bolts into them they find the center of their holes automatically.

Next weekend is Labor Day, and I took a few extra days off so there should be time to build the sliders and post up more photos of those assemblies and make sure it all works as planned.

I remember. I was wondering though if there’s still a bit of risk in things jamming up if the long tube shrinks even 1/16”. I assume you will bolt everything down and weld up the center-most pin, let things cool, then weld up the next one and repeat until you get to the ends. Or is any of that jazz needed at all?

We'll have to see, I guess.

The "ladder rungs" are solid 1.5" round stock... So if they are torqued-down to the mount, it seems hard to imagine that they would be pulled out-of-position from the final welding process.

Stay tuned. You know this thread isn't afraid to show the failures when they happen... and we can start a "Texas Tuition Pile" if needed.

Clean and tidy. I was wondering if the tapers might receive some anti-seize, or do you think these will be on and off enough to make removal resistance a non-issue?

I'm no expert welder but from my experience with that sort of stuff you need to weld 2" at a time or less and then let it cool before you weld any more(cool enough you could hold your hand on it indefinitely).

Or, if you can design it so the welds are "even", meaning the same amount of weld on opposite sides of something, then it should stay relatively straight. If you are welding a lot on one side that side will shrink and be concave.

A set of greaseable bolts with zerk fittings would be awesome... but I'll probably just go low-tech and grease them up a little before installation.

Haven't played around with Steel-IT paints yet, but did buy one can just to experiment with. Might end up using that on underneath areas like axles and frame since touchups would be easier than if everything was powdercoated.

!! BURT !!!

what’s up Brother? :saweet:

hopefully at least some of my photos are visible without a membership. I’ve been having trouble with photo hosting services like Photobucket and a lot of my photo links are broken.

Any chance we can convince you to do the 20 Year reunion in Moab? 2022 still gives you plenty of time to get the truck running good and save up some bacon and beer money too!! :)

Hey look who is back.
I might as well try and do that one as well.
I did go in 2018 but since sold the blazer and building a suburban for the growing family.
So how old is your kid now 12-13?

Sorry Greg, one last post :pimp:
Yeah Steve, I did something similar.
My daughter who was 9 months old in moab in 2006 is now 14 but I adopted 2 boys, now 3 and 4 so starting over.
But I am trying to make it when a bunch of us like Greg and you, and maybe Mike can make it so we can have the old norcalbigdawgs crew one more time
