72 k5, sons first truck build.(officially NOT mine now..)

I hope this really sinks in hard Rick for his sake and yours, I'm a firm believer in you turn into the type of person like that who you hang out with.
Hopefully he can get some good people surrounding him!

Most of his friends are good kids. one of the ones involved even I thought was good. we only knew the kid about a month though:doah: the oldest is just one of those "you call me scared I'll do ANYTHING" types. Neither one of them is allowed back to my place. I do think it has all sank in well though:waytogo:

Even good kids get tricked into stupid stuff occasionally. Glad to hear its working out good though. Hopefully this will all just be a small speedbump that you can embarrass him with in the future. When he has his own wife and kids convinced that he was an angel as a child.

he got a deffered prosecution, 6 months probation, and 30 hrs community service. :thumb: Saved his truck and gets to stay out of a real cell. Now hes grounded to his room with NOTHING but his phone (needs it for the comm service) until all the community service is completed.:deal:

....well he dodged a bullet, stick to it Rick, a little now, can help a lot later!

well now that we know we get to keep it, we have an issue to resolve.

When the headlights are off the turn signals ALL work great. when we turn the headlights on, the right turn signals stop working and they light up bright n solid "on" the whole time the headlights are on:dunno:

I've been wondering about maybe the bulb socket being ungrounded:thinking: didnt really make sense to me with it working fine normaly though:dunno: I'll have to do some more checking

Sounds similar to the 73-87 trucks issue with the running light socket corroding and creating ground issues.

socket looks clean. and if a push the bulb in hard it will start blinking . but the contacts/springs and such are all in nice shape so it still baffles me. raining here for the next few days so it'll be a bit before I go out and check it. Gotta fix the upper rad hose too...... I guess I do have a garage:thinking:

Went through this myself a few months ago...I tested all the grounds...had to grind some clean, but got all the grounds contacting...check the sockets and bulbs.

Mine ended up being the firewall harness buckle was not seated properly.

Make sure that thing is clean and seated...

Check your wires on the inside side of the firewall. If they are all working then you have cut your problem in half. I got one of those tester that has a sharp needle that sticks the wire and tested every wire on the inside. That's how I knew the harness buckle was the problem.

havent found the electrical issue yet but I found the antifreeze leak. it was coming up past the threads on the passenger side water neck bolt. bout time I figure it out:doah:

Glad your son came out pretty much unscathed and it sounds like he's learned a lesson. :waytogo: As far as the project, good job. That's something I never had with my dad and wish I had. My daughter is only 1.5 yrs but I plan on doing the same with her. I keep telling the wife she'll be welding by 5.:haha:

when he thought he was losing it he was more bumbed out about it than he was about maybe going to prison i think:rolleyes: I was so disgusted with him when he did it that taking his truck away and dismantling it was the only way I could think of to make him feel the same as me over the situation.

then I came to my senses, we were hoping the lawyer wasnt much but were prepared to FIGHT. even if we still lost the truck:confused:

As of now he finished all 30 hours of community service in 12 days and his probation officer has realized that hes not a bad kid. He will be getting off probation early:thumb:

the turn signal deal is still baffling me. I need to run a temporary ground and see if it helps. It comes on real faint and solid now when the headlights are on. I thought it came on bright, I was wrong:rolleyes:

Glad you got it figured out and are keeping the truck. Hopefully this woke him up to what can happen if he stays on this path. Kinda sucky either way. Same happened to me when I was a kid. I got out of the situation by joining the army and getting the dicipline and structure I needed. It's not for everyone but at the time it is what I needed.
I had the same problem on my truck you are having now. My under dash harness was shorting out from the collumn to the firewall. I found a used one to try and it worked. Also check all the grounds as was stated already. I was missing the one from block to firewall and also firewall to dash and it made my gas Guage move with the blinkers. Added those two grounds and that helped. The rear light sockets get rusty also so I'd try to clean them at the body connection and see if it helps.

Finally got time to fix his lights  It was the ground. had to add one to the socket. finally put the rearview mirror too. now we gotta work on the side mirrors. its coming along though. I wish I had about 2500-3000 layin around to put into it and be done with what 'I' wanted to have done for him. :dunno: Oh well its nice for now and he loves it.

does anyone have spare window crank units for a first gen layin around:dunno: his are trashed and their kinda expensive at lmc I think. after you add their shipping anyway
