'72 K5 - Where do I go from here?

BTW, my chocolate lab likes to hang out in my Blazers as well. She'll jump in the back seat and just kinda hang out for hours. Funny as hell.

Awesome! Lately I have been making lots of noise, bright lights, metal shavings, and dust so he hasn't been much company lately!

Broke damn near all of them, but all body mount bolts are out. Dude from 67-72chevytrucks is coming down this weekend to help/watch in prep for doing his. He lives in Menifee, about an hour north. Any local CK5ers wanna come out to my little mountain paradise, shoot me a PM.

Brake lines - front driver's side to disconnect? (By the steering box)
E-brake cable - at the pedal?
Small rubber hose to gas tank - cut?
Steering - down at box, or up at knuckle?

Looks good man! On another note, I was at a bar last night that had some brews from your avatar. Not bad.

You may have already read this, or been told, but save that filler neck on the old gas tank as most replacements are a short straight ones that go right into one of the rear mounts. I had mine brazed on by a local shop.

That frame is going to clean up fast..... You just saved yourself about 40 hours of upside-down struggling and swearing with crud and rust falling in your eyes! :waytogo:

Jacob,

Did not know that - thank you.

Stone is a classic 'Merican success story. I bought kegs (I have a Beer Meister) from them 17 years ago out of a small shop. Today - global. Their place here is pretty amazing. Same with Ballast Point. We know the owner, he started from nothing and now.......wow!

Anyone know what all these extra hoses to/from gas tank are for? Can I ditch them all?

You are the man Greg. Thanks for the nudges. Now that I see how easy everything will be......nice! Honestly, pulling the body was very easy.....well, with a lift. I am sure that is a game changer.

It's part of a complex evap / smog-related system... You probably had a charcoal canister in the engine bay too?

"Ditch" is a trick question. Of course you should throw all those crusty ones away, but you'll need to replace them with something...or cap them off... But if you cap them all you won't be able to vent the air when you try to fill your tank from empty....

-G

I'm pretty sure they have to do with always being able to vent the extra gas pressure up to the charcoal canister without pushing liquid fuel up the line.

keep the vent line that leads up to the gas cap. You can cap/ditch the rest. Thats what I have going on mine.

Thanks for the help everyone. I'll keep the one going up, and ditch the rest.

Honestly it was incredibly easy. Greg has a convert! Pulling it is the way to go. Did not get much done, had to help a buddy with something, but it's all good. Little at a time.......

Question: I am going to do a new wiring harness (AAW or Painless). Are there any wires I should keep/wait to remove, or are they labeled well?

image.jpg

I don't have an end result for you but since I have gutted everything I pulled the whole harness. Believe it or not it's not hard to pull the whole thing. I pulled it all and its in a box even though I plan on replacing the whole thing. If my.understanding is correct the new harness comes with everything. So pull it. Anyone have any other suggestions? That's mine!

You won't get this advice from anyone else (probably) but I'd get a 100% OEM replacement harness... Not a Painless kit.

I like the idea that anyone can look at a factory harness and diagram on your truck and figure out what's going on. You start swapping harnesses and colors and you're on your own from then on.... I plan to use a factory harness and fuseblock and then add a smaller 2nd one for any new stuff that I want... Lights, big stereo etc.

I think American Autowire makes a perfect reproduction of the original...

Actually, I agree with Greg too. I recently pulled my harness in order to graft an LS harness onto it. Having all the right colors was a huge help. Some time in the past mine was switched over to HEI and not well. That part of the harness was a pain in the ass to figure out.

Overall though don't be scared of pulling it. I was surprised just how simple the whole thing was. The in cabin harness especially was a lot more simple than I expected going in.

Great information guys, I appreciate it. I totally understand your point Greg - thank you, I'll check out AAW's offerings. The only 'modern' thing I plan to put in is an HEI distributor. I've even ditched the idea of putting in Vintage Air. I'll never put the top back on and I never use the air in the '88. Also, since it's not going to be a DD, no need for defrost. I might even tack on some metal to fill the firewall holes nicely.......we'll see.

Just to test the waters I called around about getting the frame blasted and Powdercoated, average was $500. I also read a lot of threads about it and understand there are two schools of thought (Powdercoat good vs. Powdercoat bad). Yesterday morning I ordered 10 cans of frame paint from Napa, but that will not go to waste regardless. I think that $500 can be used much more effectively than making the frame all pretty. I'm just going to stay the course and keep scraping, wire wheeling, etc. It's fun just kinda stumbling through this build, reading, learning, and very slowly moving forward. My outlaws will be spending Christmas with us, so I'll be out working on that frame a lot over the holiday.
