'72 K5 - Where do I go from here?

$850 is a butt rape even here in CA for stock 3/4's. A front is $250sh, the rear maybe $150 in good working condition.

Good to know. Mine are fine (as far as I know), I just thought.......why not? Sounds like it's not worth it/not a good deal. Thanks fellas!

The '74 front seats are totally trashed, but I just want the frames. I can get both of them for $75. I did not have time to pull them this morning or I would have them already. I'm going down there Saturday morning to grab them.

sorry I missed it, what's the intended tire size, 33? should be fine with your current axles, but you might as well run your intended numbers thru a gear calculator to see where your rpm's will end up...

if you think you may step up to a 35" at some point, you might look into some 3/4's with better gearing..

Interesting.......I am going with 35s on this one. No question. Hell, that's the reason I am doing a 4" lift kit, just to fit the 35s. Especially after seeing one of the ones in the salvage yard today that had 35s - I like it! 33s are paltry little things compared to 35s.

do you know what the current gears are? and I'm sorry, what was the trans again? 35's will make it doggier off the line and lower the rpm's thruout the range..

The 74 seat frames won't bolt in, but before you get seats like that you might take a look at new ones. By the time you recover the 74 frames you are easily over what brand new suspension seats cost.

69-72 seats are high dollar items just for the frames. The front passenger side has tilt brackets that are especially hard to find that let passengers get in the back seat easier.

Appreciate it. Any recommended sources for seats?

Finally finished priming. Got back from the gym at 0630 and been at it nonstop. Now I have to figure out how I want to handle the underneath of the floor pans/firewall.......the underneath is going to be all kinds of fun with a scraper!

be a good idea to run some maroon scuffpad's over the primer before you paint...

looks like 2000 rpm's at 65.... bit on the low side for a 70's carbed SB.... some 4:10's would liven it up nicely around town... something to think about...

Maroon scuffpads? Could you elaborate? I need something. Now that I pushed into the sun - lots of runs.

Funny, I think my C20 has 4.10s. Even when you take off gently, it chirps the tires shifting to second.

for runs, sand em out with some 220 to 320 grit paper. let it dry thoroughly first.. airdried primer is slow to cure... wetsanding usually works best... for a general, all over, "knock the shine done" scuff, use a course scuffpad.. they are usually maroon.. that's the 3M's, but any brand will do really... it's equivalent to about 400 grit...

Thank you. I plan to leave it in the sun all day to dry. I'll grab some sandpaper and pads today and get it cleaned up tomorrow. I really want to paint it before Monday. I like the wet sand idea, I'll want to spray it clean before paint anyway.
Funny, I scraped one area of bottom of floorboard before and it cleaned right up. Well, that was a 'lucky area.' The rest, not so much.......this is going to be fun.......

Well, I have a problem. I was scraping away and caught movement out of the corner of my eye. Holy shit! The entire body (and the 2 4x4s it is sitting on (stacked two high on each side in rear) was shaking like crazy. Needless to say - all stop, time for Plan B. If I knock that body off the lift - game over. I gotta think this through and really consider how far I am willing to go with this build......I'm starting to think that floorboard is just fine.......I'm not looking for another one I won't drive (like my C20).

Ok, if I soak an area with brake cleaner first, I can scrape very gently and still get it clean.

I found a nice surprise. Leave it for the body shop to fix when they do bodywork/paint? It's the only visible rot I have found.

Don't let it fall!! Not good for u or the k5.

Doesn't look terrible compared to mine!

Surprised you don't have one of these yet. All the cool kids use them...

:D

Nice! My plan is to have a rotisserie. Next winter I want it. My buddy may have one slightly used. Otherwise not terrible even new when compared to some of this other stuff we all buy.

I thought that was rot at the seams. Putting one of these bodies on a rotisserie would scare the shit out of me. Something with a full roof, no worries, other than that, I would be paranoid.

Oh, I've now tried every spray chemical I have on hand (cleaners, lubricants, etc) and brake cleaner still works best. SOAK it, and scrape gently - it goes to bare metal with no problem. When I hit Napa for some more brake cleaner I'll see if they have anything better.
