'72 K5 - Where do I go from here?

Thanks man. Finally was able to carve out a little time to place the order. Carb, Intake, Distributor, High-Torque starter inbound from Summit.

Cross-member/Motor Mounts arrived today..........moving forward - S L O W L Y. I got a good contact for a Rollcage today. I have an idea for a relatively 'unique' design (I think) that I want to see if someone can build for me. If I try to build a rollcage this build thread will still be going in 2040!

Appreciate the tip man. Yeah, installing that thing was a bit more 'involved' than one would think just looking at it. I made the mistake of tightening each piece as I installed it......center crossmember did not align (could not even get bolts in)......loosen it all, man-handle it all into place, etc. Also, not in any way bad mouthing DIY, this is a great freaking product, but one of the welded on nuts was off center. I had to cut the nut off, grind the back flat, and use a nut and bolt. No big deal, part of the game. Regardless, something you look at and think, "20 minutes" took me hours. Hell, just getting the rubber inserts installed........tight fit.......2 pound sledge tight! Whatever, first time I have to drop the oil pan it paid for itself.

Any thoughts on which set of intake manifold gaskets I should use? I bought the Fel Pro set forgetting that the machine shop gave me the Engine Pro set. The Engine Pro set has rubber end gaskets, not cork like the Fel Pro set. Rubber seems better than cork to me, but I don't have the experience many of you do.

I typically throw the end gaskets away and use a nice bead of rtv. Just dry fit the manifold with the intake gaskets first to see how big of a gap you need to fill. Use a little extra in the corners to prevent oil leaks.

Also a lot of times I'll use a small amount of rtv around the coolant ports on both sides of the intake gasket.

X2, all the rebuild manuals say to throw the end gaskets away. I tried using them once and they leaked from day one. Just use a solid 1/4" bead of ultra black silicone and bolt it on.

Appreciate it guys - beads, sans gaskets, it is! I am super stoked to take the plastic off the short block and get this thing together. There's a work picnic on Saturday.......Bahhhaaahhhaaa! Yeah, I'm going to hang out with people from work on a Saturday afternoon when I can be in my shop putting together the engine for my Blazer........Gee, let me consider that for .00000000001 micro second - Nah, we're good!

Can anyone tell me if this oil pump pickup tube is in all the way, or is the neck supposed to seat? I beat the hell out of a wrench around the neck and it will not move.......and after a scare while installing the balancer yesterday (thought I stripped the crankshaft, using a balancer install tool....long story, with happy ending) I'm a little paranoid.

I'm guessing you didn't measure the depth of bore first? Silly question I know, I just had to get it out of the way so people with real knowledge can focus on the correct technical answer for you.

The last couple I've seen have the ridge all the way against the pump. I ended up buying a tool to do it right.

Anyone know if this (where I am pointing) is an optional location for a temperature sending unit? The manifold is an Edelbrock Performer (2104). Also, any tricks to figuring out which exhaust manifold and water pump bolts will need the bolt/stud combo for mounting stuff? I'm not doing any fancy serpentine belt or anything, just the standard, no A/C for now ($$$), so I guess just power steering pump, alternator, water pump. Appreciate the help.

You can put your temp sender there as long as the rear coolant passages are open on the gaskets. Some are blocked.
