'72 K5 - Where do I go from here?

Holy shit! I knew I had been away for a while, but until I saw the date on my last post I had no idea that it's been that damn long! Sorry guys, I am still at it, just slower (if possible) than before. New job has been.....a challenge. Add in the person who is supposed to be my 'Right Hand Man' departing (....long story in itself) and I have been working my ass off. I've also been traveling far more than I prefer. I had 4 weekends in a row where I was not home (combo of work/play).

Anyway, I am installing all of the lights, front grill and (attempting windows). Holy freaking frustrating! I spent the entire day (no exaggeration) today trying to figure out the vent window/door window. I am baffled. I cannot see a way to get the damn rollers in place with the vent window installed, but it obviously has to be installed first. Anyone have any tips/tricks? Yesterday I found a thread on 67-72, kept it open when I called it a night, came out this morning and started following the guidance, only to realize it was for a truck!

I appreciate any guidance you guys are willing to provide.

Got a picture of the rollers? Not sure what you mean but I’ve removed and replaced everything in the door a few years ago. Was tricky but not too bad from what I can remember.

Thank you bp. Based on your comment, I re-evaluated the situation. Turns out - Remove the screws holding the rear track, put window in and on rollers. Slide window between outer door skin and rear window track and slide all the way back. Then install the vent window, correct one, I had wrong one in - freakin retard! Regardless having wrong window was no factor, it was getting the main window out of the way which made the difference.

So glad I replaced the pan gasket! Friggin kick-down cable all along. Lesson learned.

Getting ready to order everything to recover the seats, Houndstooth, of course. I came up with an estimate of right around $1500 for foam, covers, backs, hog rings + pliers. Sound about right? I will be at our Cypress office on 09 January (ironically, my bday), and The Truck Shop (where I get 99% of my stuff) is only 10 miles away......I might just have to get myself a few bday presents!

I found a stock looking stereo with built-in bluetooth - perfect for what I want. It looks exactly like the stock one (https://www.classiccarstereos.com/1970-72-chevy-truck-also-fits-67-69-radio.html).

I would think $1500 is in the ballpark. There are companies in 67-72 doing custum colors for houndstooth as well as. Not sure if you've looked into that.

I've also heard of good deals to be had at GoodGuys car shows. Not sure the distance from you that the big ones are, or time of year either that you'd have to wait until.

Thanks man. GoodGuys is in Del Mar, about 45 minutes from me. I go pretty much every year, but it's a long way off. There were two nice First Gens at the show last year.

Holy freakin frustrating! Anyone ever put in Vintage Air without removing the grill? After taking out the battery tray (something I had hoped to never miss with again......) I still cannot get the hard lines which run to the condenser and drier through that damn radiator support. If I have to take apart the grill I just finished putting all of the bolts in, I will freakin burn this thing! Well, ok, I won't burn it, I will probably just not have A/C. The directions crack me up, "Install hard line # 6......" Yeah, right. Just 'install' it. Simple. Bah! The entire day, ZERO accomplished. Hell, I actually went backwards because it took me forever to get out the bolts between the radiator and the battery tray.

Overall this build has been a blast, but some days..............

I'm tired of people asking me, "Mike, finish that Bronco yet?" @#&^#$^%#&@*@&!!!! Silver Bullet, bring me sanity!

Ok, two down......feeling better.

I won’t tell you the grill needs to be removed but...which part is difficult?

Any reason I cannot just cut across from the hole (the rear one)? That would solve my problem. I’m not worried about structural integrity.

Well, maybe I just need to open up that back hole a bit...........(from 67-72)

On to the hole drilling! This probably wasn't the best way to do this, but because I was drilling through the backside of the core support, I also had to drill through two pieces of metal, but because my hole bit was short, I wouldn't be able to drill through both pieces without the drill hitting, I used the hole saw I had for the dash to cut out the outer pices (2 1/2").

Once that hole was drilled, I used the divet to center the 1 1/4" hole for the grommet for the A/C lines. The first hole was a little excessive, but I didn't want to buy anymore drill bits. I'm sure the strength of my core support is fine

You can now put your #8 and #6 lines through the core support. I started on the backside with the bigger one first. It takes some fenangleing but it can be done with the grill on, again, another situation where having the grill off makes this SO much easier!

For anyone ever facing this issue in the future, removing the grill center insert was easy. I don't know why I was worried about it.......easy. Lines are in, insert is back in. Removing the Radiator Support Center Mount (thing under the hood latch) is the key. I only got a few hours this weekend, but I did get that done.

I wanted to pass along another lesson learned - Put in the battery tray BEFORE you put in the radiator. I spent 4-5 HOURS yesterday using a stick magnet (or whatever they are called) and a long 13mm (close enough to 1/2" and longest one I have) wrench getting those 3 bolts in with the radiator in the way. I removed the tray hoping it would provide more clearance for the A/C hard lines - fail. So, I basically killed all of the Blazer time I got this weekend (not much) recovering from a stupid decision. Whatever, no hurry, it's all good..........But still, every time I have the cover off of it I..........I don't know - I want it DONE it's too awesome to sit in my shop!

Saw a 1969 K5 sell for $125K on Barrett Jackson last night - no shit. It was not built to my personal taste (giant wheels, almost made me think it should be in a wrap music video), but it was very well done and amazingly clean. No expense spared on the build. My take-away, the announcers talking about, "These Blazers and trucks are really starting to go up in value......" (or something like that). I thought of my stable and smiled..........

First thing in my mind when my alarm went off this morning - it was a K20, not a K5 (which sold for 125). Sorry about that. Weird that popped into my mind at 4AM..........

So maybe I did not do things in order. Regardless. We discussed this area a year or two ago. I’m doing rubberized coating on the rear wheel wells, driver’s side yesterday, passenger today, and I am stoked to see that solid steel under the old coating........
