'72 K5 - Where do I go from here?

Don't they still use an A/C compressor on the engine? I know everything else fits under the dash, but I thought they still needed a compressor.
They do but it's just two coolant hoses so drilling a couple holes isn't a big deal later if it came to that. I'd like to add AC that way some day.

Compressor, yes.

But the squirrel cage and everything else goes under the dash. The only pass through are the heater and AC hoses....

Sounds like a plan. I did decide to wait for the firewall though. I'm going to do the suspension first. Finally get out here after losing the whole morning to horse stuff, well, and some 'firearms purchases.' Start looking at the frame - WTF! Back outside for sanding.........

that's cringing... it means the solvent in the paint was eating into the primer.. like I said, enamel air-dried stuff does not dry well.. it probably could have used another few days to be sure before painting...

sand it out.. let it dry as much as possible.... when you recoat it, start with a couple VERY light coats and let them dry throughly before douching it....

Ok, now I understand. Damn! I should have waited until next weekend to paint. Guess I'm getting antsy because I know my progress is about to slow to a crawl with new job, and comittments the next few weekends. I'll wet sand it and wait until tomorrow to repaint. I'll use this time to figure out all the parts/special tools I need to rebuild the ends of the Dana 44, install lift kit, do brakes, etc. Oh, and call NAPA to order more of that paint.

couple halogen heat lamps moved around on it on the overnight would help..... fans really don't help for this type of curing...

I don't have any of those lamps. I found another issue while sanding - I put way too much, way too fast. I wet sanded damn near the entire thing. Lesson(s) learned. That's cool.

Just as an example - tie rod ends (steering) are $40 cheaper (each) at Rockauto than Oreilleys. Same exact Moog part number. Wow.

JFC! Researching parts is like trying to decipher ancient Sanskrit. Taking a break, thinking - anyone know a way I can paint these (that will last a while)? Front and rear are same covers, I just want them black. Looks like a teenager's vehicle with those things.

Building a list of parts for suspension/brake rebuild - may help someone down the road.

I have the same covers and kinda like em. :P Of course mine are old and not so shiny so maybe don't project that same teenager-chrome-everything-look. If you really don't like them, I'd pick up something else rather than paint them. I've had people offer to buy mine a few times and mine don't look nearly as good as yours.

If you really want to just paint them, I'd use something like plastidip. It'll make them black but will just rub off if you decide to try and sell them.

they look alum... if so, you really need some RG for primer, nothing etches alum like zinc chromate..... it's really the only right way to do it.... or, you could just scuff em up, douche em in black and touch em ever couple months as they peel...

Yeah, after I sent that I realized I was bad mouthing something based on my personal taste. Not cool. My bad. My end goal is nothing but black and white (all potential jokes aside). Body white, everything else black (except chevy orange engine). I want zero chrome/aluminum/whatever. From what you guys say, maybe I'll just see what stock covers run. $600 for suspension parts. Wow. Never would have guessed that much.

If anyone is looking for all the parts for a suspension/steering rebuild, let me know, I emailed my Rockauto cart to myself. I'm going to do one more check before I order tomorrow.

Anyone know where you can get parts for the stock (blue handle) locking hubs? I think it's cool that I have stock and would like to keep them, but I would like to freshen up the guts.

If anyone else is ever looking - look at the front shaft where it connects from transfer case to front diff. If you can see the lock rings, you need outer.

Also, to get the hub off you need a spindle nut socket, something I am about to run around Ramona trying to find.

Ordered new locking hubs, I could not find parts to rebuild old ones.

Slowly moving forward.....

Save the original hubs in a Tupperware bin. You may not have the time or interest in locating NOS parts but you might stumble across the rebuild parts later on..... :deal:

Thanks guys, I got a socket at NAPA. Well, despite numerous manuals and YouTube videos, I am getting my ass kicked trying to figure out how to get this apart. All good though - learning as I go........
