'72 K5 - Where do I go from here?

Did ya find the big snap ring? After that it should just be the spindle nut and it falls off.

[minor rant]

I don't like that mnemonic. 'Cause it's only true if you're looking at the top side of the bolt head that you want to take off. Since you're rotating the bolt clockwise, the bottom is simultaneously going left while you're tightening. :doah:

I've had a hard time trying to explain this to folks who thought they were loosening while they were tightening. "But it's going to the left, so it must be coming off!"

Oh yeah, and it only works if you're looking at it from the bolt head side. A lot of automotive bolts are not easy to see head-on. Working a bolt backwards is S.O.P., but this mnemonic is confusing when doing so.

[/minor rant]

Carry on.

I have the same argument with my son after my wife taught him that mnemonic. Now he just taunts me with it cause he knows it pushes my buttons...gotta love kids.

I suspect Greg was taunting a bit as well...I laughed out loud at it.

After my brain injury, I'm just sharing what I remember.... :)

I really love these old Ford Broncos, but my memory is still fuzzy. Wish I could help you more.

So here is where I am stuck. I got the spindle off, but can't figure out how to get the U-joint/thing the ball joints screw into apart. Do I just pull the entire axle out and then deal with the U-joint? Also, if I get both nuts off the ball joints, how will that part come out? It seems like the ball joints would hold it in there. Any tips are greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Mike

Do you mean the knuckle?

Pretty sure that the inner/outer axle shafts are designed to come out together (including the u-joint), pull the whole thing right out the side through that "window" in the knuckle.

(Unless it has C-clip retainers in the center diff, but I don't think that was ever a factory thing)

You have pictures of the confusing area?

Ok, yes, knuckle is fitting nomenclature. I was concerned about pulling the whole shaft because of my ignorance of differentials, but I'll try that and go from there. I watched a few YouTube videos, but they all skipped the part that is kicking my ass. BTW - dude named Flatlander makes some hilarious (without trying) YouTube videos of working on the front end of his Suburban.

The page before this one (on my phone), the pic under the pic of the manuals and parts on the welding table, is the only one I have right now (I'm at work). I'll get some better ones tonight, this whole discussion will likely help others (as well) in the future.

Greg is right, you just pull the whole thing out, u-joints and all. I don't remember either about whether there are c-clips in the front diff, but I don't think so. Even if there are though, you just pull the front diff cover off and they are easy to see and just slide off.

Try giving the axle a good hard tug. My bet is that it will slide right out.

Are you taking the diff apart anyways? If you are, there's no harm in pulling the cover now just to check for clips. Just in case, ya know...

Front diffs are always full floating axles there are no c clips inside a front diff. At least in solid axle trucks.

Are you taking the steering knuckle off?

The steering knuckle is the large cast piece the tie rod attached to. It also contains the ball joints

Or are you having issues pulling the axle shaft out?

In your pic the steering knuckle is turned. Make it straight ( same location it would be in if you were driving straight down the road). Still might take a bit of wiggling. It should pop right out. I have seen splines going into the diff twisted making removeal nearly impossible. I don't think that is your case.

Came right out. Thanks guys! Now I obviously don't know much, but this don't look right.....
Scratch that, won't let me add pics all of the sudden. WTF?
The shaft - About two inches in from the slotted end it's pitted and rusty.

Hey, my 'Premium Member' thing is gone. Did I get kicked out? Pretty damn funny actually.

It expires annually. It sounds like this year the notifications got messed up during the software migration. You're not the only one to log in and find himself kicked out.

This is funny stuff. As soon as I got home from work I talked to the dude who owns my ISP and he walked me through setting my new IP address so I can access this site on my home network. We played phone tag for almost two weeks, and I finally got it taken care of tonight. I walk out to shop, pull out shaft (Had to edit - AXLE shaft......), see suspect part and go to post pic..........About a month or so ago we had our credit card number stolen (3rd time in 2 years) so we had to update everything (we pay ALL of our bills with a credit card and pay it off every month so we can get the flight points, we fly a lot, her family, me friends, all over the country). Obviously you will miss the small ones........well, apparently in that time my renewal for this site came up. I'm going to assume it is an automated thing, no payment, canx Premium, Whatever, renewed and back to it - ON A COMPUTER - FINALLY!!!!! Right on........Keep moving forward. BTW, new job rocks. If any of you are in Building Technologies, shoot me a PM.

Cool beans.

Steve said that all the automated renewals were canceled during the migration. So it may not have even been an issue on your end. I haven't renewed yet, it back to being an automated process?

And, yes, forward motion is a good thing. :saweet:
