'72 K5 - Where do I go from here?

It's California, thing could sit outside like that for yrs and prob only pick up some dust since it never rains!

To Ashman's point though, it does kill me seeing it sit outside squeezed in among inferior vehicles........the search for legit PPG 506 is on! He came at me with one and I was like, "Uhm........" Spent hours looking, called every automotive paint place in San Diego county....nope, his sample was not right. Today he gave me another......."THEY mixed the wrong paint."

Really, it doesn't matter, I know an extra drop of one 'mixer' can completely change the final product, and I in no way expect an exact match to the green on my K20, but I do want as close to the original PPG 506 as I can get. We'll see. The owner is a good dude, he will do the best he can.

I stopped by after work to pick up my new 'sample card' and checked out the work they are doing - I'm impressed. He's finding all kinds of holes that were stuffed with bondo and welding in new pieces of steel. I keep telling him, "No hurry, it will just sit in my shop" mainly because it is nice having the extra space for a bit.

Wife hosted her 'Book Club' (euphemism for 'drink wine and talk about how jacked up your husband is' would be my guess) last night and at one point they all invaded the shop........12 women looking around asking questions........I felt violated - glad my First Gen was spared the experience!

Had one of those 'You moron!' moments working out this morning. So, I stopped by the body shop on the way to work and dropped off the ashtray from my K20 - told him to match it! Doh! Should have thought of that....I don't know.....a freakin week ago. Anyway, he was welding those holes in the back for the stock rack (I wanted them filled) - got a few pics. Also, in between two of my customers I had meetings with today just happened to be a machine shop (just a coincidence I had meetings with both of them today.......) so I stopped in. As soon as I walked in I knew - my kinda place. Old, dirty place, guys working their asses off, and right as you walk in an old man sitting in a chair with his feet on the desk - the owner. We get talking and he says, "Blazer.......I got one of those in the back if you're interested." I walk back, it's a '89 I think - totally rotted out. No interest. However, there is a '69-'72 (not sure) chevy truck (X2) out there. I went back and told him I was not interested in the Blazer, but might be interested in the trucks. Anyway, old man asks what I am looking for with my Blazer, I tell him, and he says "Tear that thing apart, bring it by and I'll clean it up, magnaflux the block and the heads, and we'll go from there." I found my machine shop - I am stoked!

Doh! at least you figured it out before he bought paint .
Glad you found a good shop too.

I'm thinking I skipped the whole 'drain anti-freeze' step - what a freakin mess.

Great idea - More parts!

Actually we share a parking lot (at work) with a medical supply place. Tons of huge boxes in the dumpsters every day, I'll grab some new ones tomorrow - wanted to let it 'dry out' before I carried them to the dumpster.

Such a great time tearing the engine apart, stopping to check out how things work.......best damn education in this stuff you can get. What a blast!

Thanks brother - I freaking love it! Carlos (guy who did body work) is keeping the fenders, hood, tailgate, etc. at his place until I am ready for them to be installed so that they can align it all properly. Engine is next. Funding is tight (by choice, six people got laid off two weeks ago so I am not spending much........building up some more cash just in case I am next). It's all good. No hurry. Car Cover should arrive tomorrow, it will sit inside the shop, under a cover, as I S L O W L Y get the engine done. Just seeing how the few 'installed parts' (transfer case and shafts) contrast with the painted body and I know - this thing is going to look AWESOME when I am done! Ole boy did an awesome job on the body work. I am really impressed at how he went above and beyond in many ways. Progressing along just fine, even if slowed for a bit.

Not to mention that was a fast turn around. I'm not sure what you were expecting, but reading of others experiences, yours seems great! I also like the color a lot and look forward to all the panels going on. What direction are you leaning towards with the engine? BBC, SBC, carburetor, f.i.?

NICE!

Guess I'll probably just send my prepped tub to your bodyman for final paint..... then I'll have to do all the final assembly at your workshop! :)

Shipping all the way across the country will suck, but at least I'll be within driving distance of Moab for the 2018 event!

Do it Greg! I could get a freakin PhD in Blazer knowledge working with/watching you. Spare bedroom is yours, help yourself to the shop and everything in it.

Ekajkrats, I'm just going to rebuild the stock engine (350). Going with a carb (likely a 650 CFM), mild cam with a little bit of rumble ("RV Cam" is what I hear them called, one with low end torque). The engine looks really clean, so I don't think it's been that long since it was rebuilt. Basically I am just going to get it cleaned and magnafluxed (to be safe), honed, valve job on the heads (unless it needs new springs), and replace all the basics (bearings, pistons/rings, oil pump, timing chain, lifters, and all the 'externals' like water pump, starter, fuel pump, etc.). But even at that modest refresh, when you add intake manifold and carb and other little incidentals, your in the $2000-$2500 range. I've spoke to three different machine shops, and the prices have not varied much. It'll be a bit before I drop that kinda cash. I wanna see if the "reorg" at work is done. Poor bastards who got let go were replaced by technology, I really feel bad for them. I manage people......."It's the people dammit, I'm good with the people!"(for those who get the reference). Joking aside, I manage people & accounts (high maintenance customers in the Pharma world) and PM a lot of projects, things I don't think you can replace with a computer, but, I am still the new guy as I started in January. I figure, you never know, so it's a good time to build up a good cash reserve. It's all good. I signed up for (and got the company to fund) a class towards another professional certification (PMP) and have that exam scheduled for March (it's a bitch of a test these days). So it's actually a good time for a slow down, I'll be spending many many many hours studying all of the stuff the prep class company sent me (class is in February, but I plan to use that as a Capstone and be ready immediately afterwards).

Yeah, turnaround was funny. I kept telling him, "No hurry man, it's all good. Take your time." But he's doing solid work at really good prices, and targeting the builder world, so he's got a lot of work lined up. He wanted my shit outta the way. Hell, when I picked it up he was working on a 'classic' Ferrari and was showing me pictures of cars he had coming up. I got lucky, and the dude's shop is 4 miles from my house! A very lucky find indeed.

Oh well, time to get my studying on!

Nice! Ok, so I screwed up the quote a bit, but that is what I was referencing. Did not realize how accurate that movie was until I retired from the military and got a real job - they nailed it! Hilarious movie! My first job out of the military.....I start on Monday. Wednesday my boss comes up, "So, what are you doing this weekend?" I answer, 'Me and some friends are riding (I'm also into Harleys and such) to a bike show up in LA, there's always some awesome custom bikes at this show.'(thinking he is just trying to be social). My boss, "Oh, I was hoping you could work this weekend." I worked every weekend for the next year until I escaped that place. Yeah, Office Space NAILED corporate 'Merica (based on my limited experience).

I don't know how you Northern Dwellers do it. I gotta fly to Chicago for a training thing for work tomorrow so I was looking at the weather - the HIGH on Friday is 22. Twenty freaking Two is the HIGH! Holy freaking COLD. I am going to freeze my ass off. The training is in the hotel/resort thing where I am staying, so I'm thinking stop between airport and hotel and get some beer - and don't leave the hotel until I go to the airport on Friday. 22. Wow. It gets in the 60s here and I am huddling over a firepit.

It's -5 F here now. That's pretty much the high and low temp, not much change. It's cold, but it's not terrible. What makes it suck is we have a steady wind of about 20 mph...for days now. Windchill puts us down around -25 F or so. Makes my face hair freeze in seconds. :ignore:
