73 K20....crossmember time

lol yeah i know! Im trying to con my dad into making the base!

If you are serious about building your own bender check out pages 8-10 of my 77 Build. Total cost for mine was ~$500 including the die & ram.

Im getting some help to yank the ol k5 out of the garage thursday. I left the brakes hooked up so things dont get too out of hand lol. All the suspension bolts are loosened up and ready to come apart. I have to get it out on the street, pull the axles and then pull the new truck in because of the hill and narrow driveway at my house. Should be interesting haha! I welded the frame up real quick today just so it doesn't give me a surprise out on the street. My parts are starting to show up...got some nice Christmas presents as well!

Im thinking ill set the timing up to advance the cam 2 to 4 degrees. Its probably way retarded due to stretch and smog.

Pulled the gas tank and drained it, got a bit more dash to remove and im done!

Definitely. Tailgate, seats, and some more dash needs to come out. The roll bar won't be used on the next truck and is largely made of pipe so it's probably going with the k5.

I've got a 73 truck frame with sliders, winch bumper, rear bumper, frame steering brace and shock hoops welded on for sale. Short bed

I essentially have my own street so as long as others can get by its fine. My buddy and I dropped it after we got the rear end out lol. Damn hilifts are great going up but coming down... even though we were doing it evenly it still got away. Such an awesome noise. Im going to remember that forever.

Dont mind the finger in every pic lol. Winches are awesome.

Buddies awesome 1 ton taco.

Dont need no steering when you got a car jack!

One size fits all

Stage 1 crawler kit

keep the thicker frame, run the long bed and later, if you want, shorten it. However, I see a lot more dents in your future running Rubi in a long bed :D At least it will be just a flat bed, right?

Sheesh...The stuff that you California guys throw away... :doah: :eek1:
You'd be amazed :( I'll bet most of the stuff in our junkyards is better than half the old stuff driving on the roads in the rustbelt, maybe more. I wish I could win the lottery, I would run clean metal all over the country just for fun.

I'm thinking about doing that some day. Just need a diesel and a giant gooseneck car trailer.

On a good note I did find a buyer for the k5 so it likely won't be scrapped! Along with making a little bit of cash I get some 52s with the deal. Which is good since my leaf spring bolts have fused themselves to the bushings.

Yeah, I figure you're right. That beat-up sliced-up hulk that you just photographed is still in relatively pristine condition. That would be labeled a restoration candidate in our area. Even as is, with the damage and the cutting. The ad would probably read "just put it back together and have a perfectly rust-free classic."

I assume it's worth little out there in that condition? :dunno:

Haha yeah out here its a $100. I got the pre smog 73 for $150. 1st gen stuff brings quite a bit more money but its still cheap. I was thinking about the rarity of square bodies the other day but there all over the place here. I probably see 10 a day. The real enemy of square bodies or any classic is the state. Even if its not running you can turn it over to the state and theyll crush it and give you something for it.
