'74 K5 build: Smurf

I've got a HAD tcase parking brake I'm going to install as well. I'll be watching your thread. I haven't found many good write-ups on installing them.

In theory it should be simple, other than having to have a flange on the rear shaft, the clearance issues, and the end play on that shaft.

Did I just say "simple"? :haha:

I *think* running the cable is easier than it looks, but I only got partway through before I realize how borked my output was.

Point being you'd want pretty good clearance from the fan to the shroud, so you either go hog wild trimming, or move it somehow.

You forgot the option I chose! Let the fan self clearance the shroud.

Noisy, especially if you still have rubber body mounts and you get crossed up ... these old trucks can flex at the oddest times, and that is an amazing noise from up under the hood.

Just sayin'... :haha:

It's entertaining though when you have an unsuspecting passenger!

That happened to me when I went wheeling at Rausch Creek this summer with the CK5 crew... blown body mounts will do that. Scared the living **** out of me the first time, and my girlfriend almost jumped out of the truck :haha::haha:

My frame used to *POP*, then, the fan would start to eat the shroud.....
This is great fun when you're stuck in that situation.

Went cycling today -- Ecycling.

Some of you guys take your old useless truck parts in for scrap ... us nerds, we take in our old useless computer sh!t. I got rid of some hulked out desktop and a 12U server chassis that had everything good removed from it before I got it and I removed some more stuff still :haha:

That's after the back seat and inside of the truck was filled up with little stuff, Sun pizza box-sized disk enclosures, mini towers, AT power supplies (really? AT??? who the HELL keeps AT power supplies???), etc.

But doing so -- and the beautiful weather -- gave me an excuse to set up the soft top in safari mode:

and let me tell you, it justifies the crazy money soft-tops cost. I'm sun-sensitive, being a ginger and all, and I didn't get burnt or nuthin'. I was nicely cooled, and yet I could reach in and load and unload the truck ... and it only took five minutes to switch back and forth. No heavy hard top to lift about, just snap and unsnap. (Well, the roll and unroll was a bit tricky with the towels, but they help keep the plastic from getting scratched or cracked.) Anyway, well worth it :deal:

I still hate you just a little deep down inside for welding that roof on there.......

:haha:

As a purist, I hate myself a bit too. Nonetheless, it's one of the best practical mods I've done to the truck. It's a normal vehicle now. Sort of.

As the weather is warming up I'm contemplating taking your advice and doing either carpet or rubber flooring, you know, creature comforts to go with the doors and roof

You'll win me back a little at a time.....

There may not be a point to the radio, though.

The girlfriend and her son came by today, showed him how to do an oil change and such. Anyway, we took Tankie out for a Sunday drive, and at any speed, the various wind and tire and whatever other noises conspire to prevent conversation, or in fact any hearing at all. At speed, no way I'd hear the radio :(

Toodling around town was nice though.

I've also switched back to a traditional 12SI alternator, one of the ~100A stockers (Part # is 7294-3, for those with V-belts wanting such an alternator.)

I've been having fitment issues with the pulley on that 140A Pontiac one where the pulley was starting to move out at speed, fray the belt a bit, grrr. (I also suspect that some or all of the of the rectifier array is shorted as one of my batteries wore out, but that may be partially due to neglect  as well.) I've gotten tired of futzing with the thing, so I figured I'd put a regular one on Tankie, so I could have the same type on both trucks, same wiring/mounting, carry one spare that fits both, simpler solution.

So I went through my stash of stockers, found a working trail spare that will fit either truck, found a dead one to turn in as core, and went and bought a nice new one for Tankie. I figure I'll get 80% of the output, and in turn have a less exotic, more easily replaced part. Time will tell.

I was telling the gf and her son about the mall-crawlin' picture thread in the Garage. At 14 he tends to be dubious of everything any adult says, but I still think I saw a spark of interest. Coming back from our jaunt I might have accidentally driven, umm, up and across the lawn (about a foot of concrete pavers -- which, thanks to the Doubler, were left unscathed!) which led to some eye-rolling on his part ... and that gave me the idea to stack up some extra pavers and do a little side yard flexing :haha:

I think Tankie's getting basically streetable and my comfort with driving her any distance is increasing accordingly, so I may be running out of excuses to actually take her wheeling :haha:

Anyway, we had a good, family-oriented sort of time and the kid seemed to have enjoyed himself and the truck, which is a good thing, I think.

There are ways to cure that problem usually in the range of $0.50/watt RMS. ;)

Been there, done that, in my second-gen 300ZX. :saweet: Alpine head/changer (this was, uhh, before MP3  ), JL Audio drivers in custom MDF and fiberglass enclosures, blahblahblah. Mark Knopfler would have been proud of its rendition of "Money For Nothing", I tell ya.

It's hard to justify the cost and complexity involved in this case, though.

Hehe, I'll quote that so you can't modify it later when you remember the cost and complexity of taking a convertible truck and attaching a top on it.

Fah. That was a coupla hundred bucks. Seriously. Two sawzall cuts, some PM's to Issam, some welding, and a windshield install. (The soft top was pricey, but that's the case for full- or half-vert.)

Some of my reticence to do a decent sound system that is I *know* what good mobile audio is (or at least I did 10, 15 years ago, and I know enough to figure it out again) but a big honkin' truck with wide-lugged tires is just not the ideal environment for high fidelity sound.

Realistically (as it were :surepal: ) a coupla half-assed loud 6x9's and the amplifier in the head unit would prolly do fine. I was debating doing like 6x9's behind the seats and for the fronts, do like those kick panels from LMC with speakers, presumably replacing the crap speakers that come in them with something nicer ... but then, the moisture would eventually wreck 'em, etc etc. I hate to put nice electronics in the truck as it's just gonna get beat up or stolen. I donno, we'll see. I think cheap/simple will suffice.

I broke down and ordered flooring for the old girl, so here in a coupla weeks we'll see, err, hear, how noisy she is with that in place.

They may not be grand quality but some of the marine systems are not to bad on the pocket and will hold up better to the elements. You can get the deck and 4 speakers for 200 hundred dual and Sony make some decent ones to put into a toy that gets le$t to the weather
