75 K-5 5.3 LS transplant [with pics]

I had to put a new gas tank in. So after pulling the old one out I thought it would be a good idea to make a access panel so if my pump were to ever giveout it would a lot easier to replace from the top[espeially with a full tank of gas.]

As I took the tank out I was able to judge where the sending unit was, marked it, and cut out about a one foot square. Luckly, there was no cross braces to contend with.

This will make life so much nicer.
Then to attach that piece back I welded some 1" strap steel all around the hatch letting it hang in 1/2" , drilled holes. and bolted it back on. Then I welded the theaded inserts on the bottom side of the strap steel. Alittle paint, some sealer...done.

Yea, tbi tank and sending unit with a Corvette pump.
I welded the -6 bungs on the sending unit to make things easier to make fuel lines,, Do Not Do This!! What happens is the fuel gauge unit will fry and you'll end up buying another one.

The best way is to find the right fittings to switch it over.
Summit carries Earls fittings and is your best bet

Erl's part number for the conversion fittings from metric tbi sending unit to an.
9894DBJ ( 16mm line feed)
9894DBh (14mm line return)

That trap door access panel you made came out nice.

Yes, to my knowledge they do.
And I used Summit's fuel hose with thier twist-lock fittings for both supply and return lines.

this thread has officially re motivated me to build something awesome. Its gonna be a long slow process for me though.

If you want to do it right, don't believe that it can be done for $1500..and some change. You can wait and gather all the parts you'll think your gonna need and I guarantee you WON'T have it all.
This is no TBI swap,TBI's are great but, your converting to a far more advanced set up with a lot more capabilities for modifications.
I'm not trying to shy away anyone from attempting this, I'm saying it's a lot of work research and $$$.
Just look on other sites that are dedicated to this engine and talk to those guys, they will enlighten you.

So I could not figure where the t-case shifter went exactly ,so I picked up another one at pick-a-part out of a later model K-5 that had the same type of shifter.

My original hole wasn't off by much but hey, for 10.00 this was much easier to install this than cutting and filling a hole in the other

I ended up taking 3 1/2" out of the floorboard to make it fit, otherwise, the bolt holes all matched up.
When it came time to hookup the linkage,I found that the stock rod was way too long. I had to cut 3 1/4" off and rethread it.

Good thing I've read this, I was planning the same thing for my nephew's blazer. He needs to run a electric fuel pump for his late model BBC which does not have a boss for a mechanical fuel pump.
