Dave that truck is from an auction, that is what all the white writing is on the back of the bed.

Im willing to bet the truck was totaled, towed, and then the guy bought it back from insurance. Without it making it to auction.

Are those negatives?

I talked with the guy who's place it is at...he quoted the owner 3500+ in parts alone for repairs, new frame, frontend, cab, etc. He said the drivetrain looks meticulously clean though.

Question...does a SRW Dodge 3.54 D70 swap gears with a DRW Chevy 4.10 D70HD carrier?

It only means the guy might be making a lot of money off you. But I would buy that setup in a heart beat! That's the stuff swap dreams are made of.

Dave there is a 96 crew cab 2wd dually down the road from me for 6 or best. 220 on the clock and a complete not totaled truck. its rusty but I'd bet you could take it for 5 and save the shipping costs to get it back.

Part out the rest of the dodge stuff and boom done

getting this one for 3250 plus my gas, clean title, and the owner and I agreed on this tonight, paypal deposit is on its way, he will email me a receipt for that, and then COD...should be about $600 or so fuel for the trip, but I was going to make a trip to NC anyway, which would have cost me $250, so I'm only spending the extra 350 to get this truck home....
Has a good box on it, and a decent interior, so I'll try to sell some parts and make a few $$$ back on it as well.
I've settled in my mind that the 166K on the engine, and the trans has "supposedly" been rebuilt, but I'll have it dyno'd to check it out before it goes in the truck, is a good deal for what I've seen around MI, IN, OH, IL areas.
The KDP mod is already done, it was creeping out by a few mm he said, I'll pull it off to check it out anyway. It was a complete running truck before this accident, so everything is there, should have all the small stuff to do the swap as well. Stephen said the radiator is hit by the fan, but not sure if I could have used it anyway???
Anyone know if the 3.54 gears from the D70 will swap into my D70HD dually axle? I'm thinking so?

HUGE props and a shout out to Stephen..(nerraw117) and Chris (K20) for doing the legwork on this truck....right in their neighborhood, so I'll be buying some dinner and drinks for them when I pick this thing up in Sept...

Now from what I read it is 440tq at 1600 rpm....I'm thinking I need to be in the 500-600tq range....what will that take, and how will it affect mileage while towing?

I just want warm up my big block...maybe an LS engine...how about a Cummins making 600ft/lbs of torque?

Hey don't get me wrong. The difference between Dave and I is he can make his delusions reality.

That is sweet! After talking to you last night I knew you would buy it! Good call!
Can't wait to watch the build! :waytogo:

Gears should swap Dave, super cool man you will never regret going to a Cummins. Don't so much worry about power ratings now it will tow better than a big block in good shape

Exactly. Leave it stock for now.

:D well it sounded good on paper....really what set me off was the fact that the payoff should be within 5 years or less....warmed up 454 ring and bearing rebuild of the short block, along with cam, intake, headwork, valves, springs and headers was looking like 2-2500...OD 4L80E in the truck, another grand, so about $3500 to make it power worthy of towing the 18K. Now that should have been the end of it, but with more power, who knows where the mileage would have ended up from the present 6...so figuring a solid 6...2800mi/yr avg ÷ 6mpg x 3.75/gal = 1750/yr in fuel costs x 5 years = $8750.
Cummins @ 10mpg (from what I read this should be the minimum with the provided 98Dodge's drivetrain) x 4.00/gal...1120/yr x 5 years = $5600, so the difference of $3250 is about the same of what it would cost me to rebuild/update the current drivetrain, and of course I would still be wanting FAST after having installing it on the Maiden...another 3K right there. But without the FAST, the total cost of the 454/4L80e combo and fuel for 5 years is about $12250
The Cummins swap and 47RH trans is $3600 up front (including fuel to get it home) - say 750 for recoup of parts sold/and scrap of the leftovers, so $2850...now I know a bunch of little crap comes up, one of which isn't so little with an in bed fuel tank of 75 gal or so, lets say $750 for that stuff, but in reality it will be $1500 cuz you have to double everything and take twice as long as your best estimate, so now we're at $4350 to get that drivetrain in the truck, + the $5600 in fuel costs will put it at $9950 for 5 years of upgrades and fuel cost. Leaving a difference of $2300 in favor of the Cummins swap.
Any better ways to talk myself into this now?

:haha::haha::haha: Well put AJ!

Can't wait to get started....must be done by June 1st! It will have to shakedown pulling to Silver Lake, then the trip to BB14 in Sept!

Really?

Do governor springs first thing and reset injection timing to 16* BTDC. They don't add fuel in them selves, but they recurve the existing fuel. Believe me drivability goes WAY up, mileage will go up from stock. You could do a nice little 10 plate at the same time, won't hurt anything. Stock is for chumps. Especially in those. They're grossly detuned in stock trim just to make emissions. They're not set up for maximum efficiency or economy. You have to do that yourself.

This is phenomenal! I knew it would happen but didn't think it would happen this quickly. Awesome Dave!!!

Unless you want to spend money on Trans upgrades right away then yes leave it very close to stock :waytogo:

what are we talking for trans upgrades?

I knew that would be your thinking Luke, just can't leave good enough alone can ya?
Need some "splainin" on the items mentioned though...Have heard about injector pump timing, but have never looked into it...assuming its like the dist timing for a gas engine, so that it injects fuel at a certain point of the piston travel, but no idea how to do that timing set up?
The "10 plate" ???
The governor spring? Is this for rpm limiting?

As you can tell, Newbie here on this diesel stuff!
Bring it on, I did over come my fear of wiring (to a point) putting the FAST on the Maiden, so I'm feeling somewhat confident I can deal with a Diesel now.
