76 K5 Build; More Parts....Trucks

Etither next spring or if I have the money this year I will be doing gravel or crushed concrete for a drive back there. It will be along side the fence until it gets past the pine tree.

What did you go with for wire out there? plan on having 100A service?

2-2-2-4 Aluminum, MHF (Mobile Home Feeder) so I could direct bury it. It's good for 90 amps. I have 90 amp breaker in my main panel and just use the 100 amp as the disconnect at the sub.

I also ran two PEX lines out there. One for water and one for air back up to the house garage. That way if I need air for a tire or something quick I won't have to run out back.

With that said.....

This happened today. Power is on and flowing.

Going to try to get some help together this weekend to hang the ceiling, then I can get some lights/fans up. Lighting will be T5HO. Probably somewhere around 8 or nine 8' fixtures. I want enough light to be able to do surgery in there.

There may be such a thing as too much light, but I've never encountered it.

Picked up two of my lights so I'd have temp light out there. Also got a roll of 12/2, outlets, switches, boxes and all the little bits for the wiring (staples, wire nuts...etc). Forgot to get a couple j-boxes, I'm sure I'll be by Home Depot or Menards in the next day or so.

Grabbed a scrap piece of wire just to up a light on the floor (was getting dark when I got home). Hung my other light on the trusses, will wire both of them up tomorrow on the ceiling. Can't wait to get the rest of the lights, going to wait till Menards has their 11% sale before I buy them. But even with just the one wired up (two shortly) now it's plenty bright to pull wire and get things in there.

With the doors shut and just the one light on, no flash from the phone. Really glad I decided to go with T5HO's.

Again, just the one light.

Where did I leave off....

Got my ceiling up. Borrowed a drywall lift. Problem was it only went up 11'6", I needed 14'. Solution was to build a box to sit on top of the lift. Worked, but towards the end of the run it was getting a little sketchy. Put a layer of plastic on the trusses before the OSB went on.

After that i had 15yards of stone mix delivered. Rented the little tractor again and spread that around. Went 8" deep in front of the approach and 6" everywhere else. When I can afford it (probably spring) I will finish the drive. Should need another 20 or so yards.

Went from this:

To this:

After driving on it some and a decent rain, it has packed down nicely. I need to rake out a could high/low spots...but it is much better than it was and I'm super happy with how it turned out.

Next on the list of projects was the storage loft. It runs the depth of the building and is around 6' wide. Header is a doubled up screwed/glued/nailed 2x10. Joists are 2x8's and posts are three 2x6's screwed/nailed together. Where the posts are, there is a seem in the 2x10's. I tried my best to get it square and level. Square I hit no problem. I'm about 1/4" out of level on the 30' run....close enough. I did all of this myself over the course of a few nights.

Work benches were next. I wanted something high enough I could comfortably stand at. Ended up around 42" high on the tall side and 38" on the short. Each is 24" deep and 8' long. The south side has a 5' extension built off of it. I have a horizontal file cabinet going there, along with the mini fridge. I will get some lights on the bottom side of the loft soon. It may not look like it in the pictures, but they are square/level. I built them in place because the floor has a few dips in that area.

The mini fridge was too good a deal to pass up. I was at HomeDepot for work and saw them in the aisle on sale. Normaly $178, marked down to $128. Thought about buying one right then but didn't. Kept thinking about it all day and decided late to go and pick one up. I got there about 9:30 and they didn't have any left except the floor model. So I bought that one and got an additional $20 off because is has a small ding in the door.

I think that brings it up to current. I did mount 5 lights on the ceiling, still need another 4. And I still need to get my beam mounted up on the ceiling along with the fans. But so far, it hasn't been that bad out there as far as air flow goes.

Have the Blazer loaded up for a bog tomorrow, will try and have someone get pics/video of it.

Two were cut when I bought them. I don't really want to cut the others. I'm welded at both ends, so each tire will be spinning the same no matter what. As far as if running them on the back vs. the front....that's a toss up. Cuts should dig more and I'd rather not sink the heavy end of the truck if I can help it. This will be my first time using them so I'll report back how well they do.

Edit: Most of the fast rails run a skinny/smaller cut tire up front....maybe there is something to that.

I think all this depends on what school of thought you subscribe to. The uncut tires in the front might "pull" the rig thought the mud better. Or like you said they shouldn't dig as much to lack of cleaning. Maybe the cut tires up front to help pull the truck. I know some subscribe to the small/ skinny tire up front for better steering.

Some of the 4x4 truck puller guys run a slightly lower gear in the front to help "pull" the truck down the track.

I have done alot of muddin in my day but never messed with cutting tires.

We'll see how it goes. I'm anxous to see how well they do. I don't think I'll have much of a problem with wheel speed. If it sinks like a stone, I can always swap them around to see if that's any better.

76 K5 Build; Barn Almost Done!

Awesome.. Leave the k5 on the trailer for the dune party next weekend. :thumb:

Shop looks awesome. On a lighter side; I knew a guy who made his storage area above his shop just barely taller than him. Don't do that. He was 5'4" and I'm 6'5". I hated his shop.

I need to go check in on that thread. I want to make it out there. I get off work at 3 on Friday and have to be back for 7am Sunday morning....so it'd be just a day trip for me.

Standing on the loft, I have about 1" above my head before the ceiling. At 28 years old, I doubt I'm going to grow much more. Under the loft I have 83" floor to joist. I figure I'm really going to be the only one up there and it's just for storage so anyone else that had to go up there wouldn't be there long.

Truck did great at the bog. Did well considering it was the first time out with this motor and tire. Wasn't a big fan of how they ran the classes, but it was new people running it this year. I may swap the cut tires to the front for the next one, just to see how it does. After I got done power washing it, I had water leaking from the block. I think it's coming from where the knock sensor used to be on the lower right side (short block was a TBI motor before I put my top end on it). It looks like the knock sensor was broke off, I've gotten a few drips from it before but now it has leaked all the water out.

My cousin got a video of one of the runs with his phone...so the quality might not be there.

Did some much needed maintenance on the K5 today. Greased the front end, replaced a torn brake hose, new power steering pump, cleaned mud out of the rotors while I had the tires off.

I had been having problems with my steering. Even with the crossover, I still had problems with my steering, not much (if any) power assist and with a welded front end steering wasn't fun. I tried a used pump I had laying around and that ended up being worse than the one I took off. Bit the bullet and bought a new (reman) one. While it was out I did the common mods, stretch the spring, drill out, machine washer. It's soooooo much better now. One finger steering. I still plan on hydro assist when I can gather all the parts cheaply.

New steering pump.

When I was grinding the calipers, I wasn't paying attention where my sparks were going and melted a hole in the drivers side rubber hose. Awhile back I had picked up some braided lines from the classifieds, planed on using them on my other truck....but the K5 needed one sooner. While I was in there I cleaned out the rotors and greased the front end.

For those not familiar with mud running, this is what comes out after a short run. I think I have some pics earlier in the thread of when I bought my D60 and the dirt that came out of it. Note the drive flanges. I put them on because A: I don't want to pop one of my Selctro hubs and B: I can't unlock them unless I jack up a tire because the shaft's bind up.

I picked up another truck, I think I'm going to make this one into my full on comp bogger. I originally owned it 3 (4?) years ago, even made a few threads about it here. Sold it to my cousin with the rule that if he were to sell it I had first chance at it back. Well that didn't work out, he sold it to a friend of his....and I was pissed. Not much I could do about it though. Eventually he ended up with it back. He got himself into a situation and needed some money and I bought it off him this time.

I posted a few pics of it ealier. It's an 86 short box. It still has the 350/465/205 I put in. Has 4" springs up front and 64" spring/home brew shackle flip that I did when I owned it. Also has a new cam (about 1 month ago I helped him with that) and a D60/14BFF...that I also helped him put in. He did the half (1") body lift on the cab to clear some 38's that I gave him. Not a bad score for $800.

Plan is to gut it (body is worse than it looks) 454/Th350/205. I have a line on a Th350/205, supposed to be picking it up Saturday. Have some feelers out for a stall converter for it. I've got a 454 that will get a freshening. I worked out a deal with a friend of mine and have a stroker crank for a BBC....so 496 might happen.

Expect a build thread when I finally start making progress on it (fall/winter).

And last but not least.

I don't really do the facebook thing....actually just got into it the last couple months. Mainly joined because craigslist sucks balls now and the buy/sell pages on the book are much better. I've bought/sold/flipped quite a few things on there so far. But I think this is my best buy as of yet. I opened one of the pages and the first post I saw was for an NV4500/241 for $200. I replied right away saying I'd take it no questions asked. The t-case is a drivers drop, so not much use to me and I already own an NV4500/pass drop 208 but at that price I couldn't pass it up. If I don't use it, I'll trade it off or have no problem making a profit on it.
