Dave, how about this as a brace?

Still keeps decent visibility for rear/side but adds some important triangulation.

what about moving the top point to midway between those two small bars, and running it down to the box plate (like you have in dotted lines?)
 
I think it's important to support the cage at it's highest point, put a tube between the rear passengers. I also like a flat top style cage, they tend to stick when rolled insted of turning the rig into a big ball in a rollover.

The three top cage bars are pretty level, the middle one is .5" higher than the outside two....

I played around with more side bar support ideas this AM, came up with these two:

This one I like for triangulation and protection, but it closes up the sides more than I want, and I don't like the way the lower bars tie into the floor plates.

This design I'm liking a lot, it provides good upper support to the top bar, going down it ties into the B pillar and the rear floor plate, is a little more pleasing to the eye, and also leaves the sides open a lot more...good or bad I like the sides open.

that last design is the best for stregnth. and it looks good:waytogo: leaves plenty of access too

I like both designs...that's a long piece of tube that will bend in a rollover.
Be carefull adding too much tubing, you don't want the rig to be flop happy like my rig was..:doah:
 
I would at least add that back one.... imo that one is helping way more than the front one....
 
I am not saying you guys are wrong or anything but seeing quite a few roll overs and building a couple cages. Putting some sort of triangulation in on the top of the cage right now is more important than supporting that bar.

I do agree it does need some support but every cage is a compromise and most roll overs are not endos or back flips meaning they are actual roll overs ( coming from the side) The biggest problem you will see with cages is them bending side to side. The biggest way to fight this is to make sure the top of the cage is rigid.

Of course you can't prepare for every situation and at some point you actually do need to say enough is enough.

But I think he should be more worried right now about getting some more bars in the roof than in the side

I agree 100% Even if I do go all jungle gym with my rig someone will chime in and say there is a weak point. Other than completely incasing yourself in steel with no holes there will be a weak point somewhere.


Dave I have seen a basic 4 point roll bar save lives, and your cage is way above that. Go with what you feel is comfortable
 
Thanks for the input eveyone, I've considered a lot, and looked at a lot of cages too.
After coming to the conclusion of what we had to work with from the S&W cage, going higher was a must, and the 3 top bars provide good head room and protection to the sides of the passenger compartment. The 2 tie ins to the long bars along the sides will bring them in to a stronger upper cage, and using the diagonals across the 3 upper bars will tie them in even more in case of a roll over.
I made the 2 side bars as they are in green tape, and will take the rear diagonal (tape) bar down to the rear floor plate also. The front diagonal (tape) will go up to the B pillar area and be supported by kerts tube gusset as well.
I should have the cage completed this week I hope so I'll get a pic of it all when I get everything welded up.

I even experiemented with overhead welding today, and started to get some decent welds out of it, so I decided to try it on the cage... I got most of one side welded up today. Some turned out real good, others not so pretty.
More to come tomorrow.
 
Its got a roll bar! Just roll it over and do all your welds down:rolleyes:
 
ya know I thought of that, and will probably weld a temporary support on the back so I can blast underneath and paint it while the body is off the frame again. I can roll it on the tailpan with protected tubing, and prop it up at the firewall, blast and paint it while it does a wheelie!

hahaha Yeah, I've contemplated waiting til I can do some floor replacement surgery, but who knows when I'll get to that????

Never the drill here is not to replace floors, bash body cut more of it off replace with tube. And so on and so forth.
