Ive used gun oil to keep a freshly bored block from rusting for about 3.5 years now.

Finished refurbing my gauge cluster tonight at work.
I had two tach clusters, and about 3 other ones I used the best parts of all of em to make this setup:
I need to use some plastic lens compound on the clear to clean it up better, and the bezel just don't have the spark it should have....maybe a coat of hemi orange is what it needs?

.What year range used that 5k tach, is that from a gasser ? That would be almost perfect for my 12 valve , if I can adapt one to read off of the cummins.
all gassers get fogged... nowadays it's kinda boring with the much more common EFI stuff, ya just spin down the primary fuel filter and fill it with a 2-stroke mix, they really dont even smoke when ya run em...
but I still get to do a few carbed motors here and there, now thats fun... I'm a huge fan of Marvel mystery oil for it... always a hoot getting a huge smoke show going pouring a 1/2 qrt down the carb...
Thanks josh, I got it out of a 77, but I think any 70's tach is the same....in 80 or so I think the numbers changed...Rene' knows more about that, as he put one in his 90 I think.

I've used Seafoam, Marvel, and GM EOS, to stall the engine at storage, all seemed to work well for that, although I can't say as I've ever torn one down to inspect how well it protected things....I think keeping the moisture out is important as well, that's why my bike and my Vette sleep all winter in the 50* storage.
Cool , I know plenty of guys have adapted gasser tachs, a few factory GM units IIRC to read a 12valve, so it can be done. My max rpm will be in the 4k range so that tach would be sweet.
I'm really impressed with the way your rig has evolved, and if my life weren't so crazy (4year old and 4 month old) and Mich. wasn't as far as it is I would have loved to have made it to the build and greet.

My tach donor was a '78...but I'm pretty sure the newer ones went to 5k as well. Lord knows the 80's smogger motors weren't capable of spinning much more than 4500 in stock form.

That said, My Pop came over today and helped me on the rad support. We made some changes to it to accomodate the Northern Alum radiator. Basically massaged a little sheetmetal, and modified some bottom and top cradle(?) pads for it to sit on.
The we started on a couple mounting brackets for the Windstar fans (thanks again Jess) We cut off all the Windstar mounting brackets, as two of them were right in the way of the trans cooler line ports, and we made a cradle for the bottom of the shroud to sit in, then I need to still make an upper retainer of some kind to hold it in place.
So Pop was getting his hands in on it again, and I'll get my grandaughter out when we start working on the body some more, she likes doing stuff "in" the truck, even if its just seeing how well the seats fit her.
Definitely spend time with your kids....they grow so fast.

I only use the thing in the snow really. Its slippery so I can just slide under the truck and out really easy in the snowy driveway where a creeper wouldnt work
we live by gym mats in the marina for working under the boats... an advantage of the boss's daughter being a gymnast, we get the throw outs... beats laying in rock all day...
yeah, about 1/2 our marina is 3/4 stone... the gym mats are awesome, they're like 3' x 4'.... gotta watch leaving em in the sun tho, they get mega hot if ya do...

Today I got the brackets made for the radiator and shroud to stay put on the support.

i remember one of the first modification that i did too my jimmy! that i had read here. i wasn,t a member then. it was to paint my inner dash a bright silver,it would reflec the light and make a real brighter dash board. it work great!!! big difference while night driving. it was simple just paint the green portion of the dash aluminiun. maybe you can try it before installing your dash board.

We had a great time Rick...I thought it was going to be miserable hot like it has been at my house, but it was about 10-15 degrees cooler about 2.5hrs north, it was a great weekend.
Did you make it out to the river?
So is that the green plastic housing or the metal frame that goes around the gauges? I might try it.
Started working on getting the radiator into a permanent position, along with mounting the windstar fans/shroud, and the coolers also.
I made a frame welded to the support to bolt the coolers too. Very sturdy, and they should get plenty of air.
Welded nuts, cuz they're hard to get to when the radiator is in place.
The fan shroud lower channel supports the shroud as it is a wedge fit in the channel, and bolted in place on the top side to keep it in place.
