The carnage

These are the only chips I found on the ring. The Pinion looked fine.

Just swap the guts to your axle, then you don't have to mess with moving mounts.

Yeah that's what I am going to do. Completely forgot about that until I looked at the picture. I'll also be doing a disc conversion since it comes with the brackets.

So what all am I going to need to fix this front axle and put the Detroit and disc brakes on the rear axle? Im talking bearing/seal wise.

Any help would be appreciated as I've never touched the insides of axles before.

For brakes I'll need 3/4 ton front calipers, rotors, and brake lines correct?

Correct.

As for bearings and seals, just tell them what axle you have, and they should be able to get the correct parts for you.

Tear it apart, and just see what is shot as far as bearings and races go. I would probably just replace all seals while you are in there.

There are a lot of little things you will also need for the disc brake conversion. pads, caliper pins, banjo bolts, etc.

Here is a better pic of the spider gears. I've located a Dana 44 Detroit locker for $335, so I will probably pick that up when I get paid next. Don't really want to drop $700 in lockers all at once.

Found I had a busted u-joint on my front driveshaft. That will be nice to not have that banging noise anymore. I can't believe it didn't completely brake for how hard i've been on it.

Picked up the CUCV 14 bolt with a DETROIT LOCKER!! That will be nice.

Not sure who makes these, but it came with caliper brackets for the disc conversion.

Anyone know why the hubs on this 14 bolt look a little different than my current 14 bolt? The one under my truck now doesn't have the indentions on the hub.

I think it may have come from under a one ton van originally. How wide are the van axles? 69"? I'm sure someone knows.

I think the 3/4 ton and 1 ton truck axles were the same width, they just had different locations for shock and spring mounts. Could be wrong though.

No. Started pretty late last night. Both carriers are ready to go back together.

Spent most of yesterday working on this thing.

Got both 14 bolt carriers torn apart, guts swapped, and put back together. Both axles turn very smoothly, I hope it stays that way. In all honesty it was pretty damn easy. The only hard part was unbolting an torquing the ring gear bolts cause it was so hard to hold. And holy **** that is a heavy carrier! Tested out the Detroit by jacking up the rear diff and it works great. Can't wait to really give it the test.

Got done with that part, so I moved on to the disc brake swap. Pulled these rocks out of one of the drums.

Brackets need some paint.

Still haven't touched the front axle :haha::doah:

You did a real good job on that. I know it can be aggravating to get those bolts back on the ring gear. I've even heard of some guys trying to use an impact gun to put them back together. Not smart!

So what rotors and calipers are you going to use? Same as the front or what?

Thanks, I hope it works out. Like the 'how to' I followed on how to do it said, "its so easy, its scary" :thumb:. An impact would've been nice, but yeah not the right way to do it. I used a torque wrench.

Yeah for brakes I plan on getting some 10 bolt calipers, rotors, and lines.
