'78 K10 Build

Tore into the axle today. Got the driver side king pin top cap off and it looked pretty nasty.

After about an hour of chiseling the melted bushing it now looks like this.

Hmmmm you think it needs it? If I pull the carrier its getting a locker before it goes back in, even though I wasn't planning on doing a locker right now.

Replace the inner seals

Agreed , I didn't bother doing it on the 60 in my K30 and of course after the first trip out the drivers side leaks :doah:. Not the end of the world, and of course it got a locker while it was apart :D.
It's not in the truck yet, you're this far into it, and it may as well be "right" when you do sling it under the rig, so ........

Yeah true, I was just gunna do the bare minimum but I might as well get it up to par before I put it in. Needs a pinion seal too.

Forgot to add, I did the shifter mod where you weld the very end snout to the part that goes into the shift rail. I recommend it to anyone that has a sm465. It feel so much better being all solid now. Kinda feels like a short throw. Thanks John.

Question on the lift and clearing hummer takeoffs - did you use zero rates front and rear? So 5" of lift overall?

It sucks having to spend the money on some of the "little" things, but most of those things are a whole lot easier to do to an axle on stands as opposed to one under a truck. Check around, you can get some pretty decent rebuild kits for 60's. When I did the one under my K5 I went through 4wd factory and bought the whole deal, I figured everything else was going to be brand new so why not and they also give you some options on u joints and such. All the bearings were Timkens and joint options were spicers and up.

Did that on mine and the welds kept breaking. Keep an eye on yours

Locked front and rear? You're getting serious now.

Martin

haha yeah, I figured it was time to step it up since I was the only one not locked front and rear. Don't wanna be the guy holding eveyone up on the trail.
