79 blazer build

Thanks, I remember reading that about the hinge pins.

My wife just found me a 74 hardtop for free on craigslist. I am going to pick it up in the morning! Full convertable hear I come!

well here it is. Not in the greatest shape, but I will just sand it and reglass the bad parts.

nice. full 'verts are great! time to build yourself a cage tho! (at least it doesn't appear that you have one in previous pics). especially with the kind of wheeling your pics show you doing.

I have the steel in the garage for the roll cage, and rear bumper and swing out tire carrier. I hope to have it all done by early spring.

Well, I found all the parts for the full vert swap. Started about 2 hours ago. Now I have it roughly welded in place.

i have done a similar thing with the rockers on my rig. i did it first, with supersize75k5's help, to the '83 body i had previously. it is not in any way shape or form even "semi-weather proof". I would come out in the morning and hop in my truck and there would be a huge puddle on the floor. rain water runs down the door, hits the rocker tube and runs into the cab. additionally, you can't do quick release hinge pins cutting up quite that high (ofcourse that doesn't help you now... )

so i did it a bit differently on my '73 body when i did the body swap. i built the following to aid in the weather proofing, plus make it street legal to run without doors in states where doors are required (i.e. washington).

I like that. I'll have to do something similar.

it works real nice. i was out in the snow today and it really kept the weather out nicely. just don't forget to put a drain plug in... i haven't done it yet (i just use my shop vac if i need to get liquid out, right now), but i plan to take a large bolt or perhaps even something for piping, and weld the nut to the bottom side of hte floor board and then screw the bolt/plug in from the top side so that it is easy to drain...

Well I got the left side mostly done. The door is on and only needs some trimming. Now to start the right side.

Well its been a while since I posted progress. I have completed the full convertable top. It works great with only some minor details to work out. I have also been working on my cage. My thing is I need it to not be so complicated that I can't get to the back seat. I think I am about 75% done with it. I have tied the cage into the bed sides hoping it will strengthen the cage and to later tie in a tube on the outside. What do you guys think? will it stand up to side flops or one roll? It is made with .120 DOM. I don't care if I have to replace it afterwards. I just need me and my girls to be safe.

The next problem to fix is the weight issue. I took it to the local truck scale and it was 5680lbs. My toy hauler has a payload of 4900lbs. I know if I loose the top, doors and tailgate I will loose a lot of weight but how much? Its too cold to do that now. I am going to pull the drivetrain in the next week or so, so I can reseal it. I was thinking of tapering the nose. Will that loose much weight?

Well the engine is ready to come out. I am just waiting for a buddy to bring the cherry picker. I am going to twin stick the 205 and reseal everything. I am tired of it leaking.

What kind of bumper are you gonna build? Tube or a heavier duty bumper?

It is going to be a winch bumper, but as light as I can make it and still be safe. I am ordering the xrc-8000 winch for it right now.

I plan on a rear winch bumper but mine will be heavy duty but hopefully not to heavy. Ha we will see but I'm not quite there yet. When do you plan on building it?

I have to get the drive train sealed up and the twin stick installed, then I will start putting it all back together. I hope to have it done by the middle of march. With two little girls, I have other priorities that come first.

Well, I have made some progress. I pulled the motor out and started to pull it down. When I took the intake manifold off a large chuck of head came off. So now I am putting it back together with Vortec heads, new RV cam, timing chain, aluminum intake manifold, and headers. It has cost more than expected, but I should have a great motor when I am done. Pictures soon.
