I got the brakes and rear end buttoned up today.

Started sanding my fenders.. again and again, definitely rushed the prep a bit. Found quite a few spots that could use the glazing putty I picked up. The most noticeable was the front section of this fender.

I crossed blocked the section and found the bare section to be quite high at the inside edge of where the dent was. The previous dent was fixed but the high spot was never hammered out. I took my body hammer to it until the ridge couldn't be felt by hand anymore really. I did also heat up the steel which helped it tap down, then I put putty on it after, block sanded again with 220-320, and then primed.

Turned out pretty good. There's a tiny variation of how true the body line is at the spot where dent was filled by the PO, so a bit more sanding with some 180-320 will be needed and then I think I'm happy to put this one away for now.

Body work seems like it's all about redoing things so many times, you learn to take your time the first go at it. Good lessons to be learning before taking on the bigger projects this winter.

Body work for me is is a art I don’t have patience for! Looks good Nick! :waytogo:

I get flash backs to being in a wood shop building stairs, sanding and sanding and sanding....

Except this isn't wood...

Lol!

Actually I like patches and welding but the finnish work not so much. Would really like to know how to paint.... I just don’t have a good longterm spot or the time. Your new place looks ideal for it!

The new spot should be decent for sure! I plan on making some poly walls around the one bay in the garage when I go to do it, or just spray it outside come spring maybe. I also don't know much about painting ( when it comes to cars.. ) but ill just have to figure it out. I'm hoping my years of painting trains, walls, and canvases with spray cans will give me a head start.

It'll definitely be a good spot for all the rust repair. I really enjoy the welding and patching ive done. Never touched any sheet metal yet, should definitely cut up some shit fenders I have, and practice patching them.

You should resurrect gang green and get a little bit of welding and patching done haha

Looks to me like they should look really nice when you're all done.

Thanks, I think they'll be more than good enough for what I expect. Not gonna be some candy ass metal flake show stopper, but a nice rig is all I ask of her lol.

Also just because square body burnouts.

My good friends shortbox is good motivation when he lets me play with it
5.3 turbo, cam, springs, injectors ect.. about 801 hp at the crank or so I'm told. Running 12 pounds of boost currently.

Brown santa brought me some goodies today, all new control arm bushings and hardware, front end suspension goodies as well, and a 12 bolt i had found growing into the ground in a guys backyard.

i pulled the cover there and it is 3.08 and open, i think i have a lunchbox laying around for it down the road as well, so i took it home. The guy even had a service truck crane to hoist it into my truck so i gave him full asking price since i didnt have to hump it at all. Got home today and started to tear it down to see whats going on with it. The PO said it came out of a truck he bought just for the bed. The drums were a PITD to get off , found out why once i finally got them off :doah:

Never seen a brake that bad before in real life... I kept tearing it down and didnt find much going on beside the need for new... everything haha.
Im hoping the drums from my 10 bolt will swap over to these when the time comes. New axle bearings and seals shouldnt be too bad compared to drums price wise.

I did notice one shaft had some wear on it.. would this be from wearing on the bearing that sits in the pumpking beside the carrier?? I didnt notice anything feeling rough in there. I have yet to pull the carrier so further inspection will reveal any bad news i guess. When assembled the axles spun well and i couldnt hear anything but that very well doesnt mean nothings wrong.

I dont know much about the 12 bolt, through some research i found out is uses a 30 spline axle instead of the 28 (although i havent personally counted ), so i cannot swap one of my axle shafts over.. And the pinion is a bit bigger... I know my k5 was 30 spline front shafts in the 10 bolt, which changed from 28 spline so maybe the rears did also.. finding a 90-91 ten bolt rear would probably be more trouble than ordering new shafts for the rear end.. these are all future problems for now though. ill keep digging into it and see what i find.

The axle shaft does not touch the bearing in that area. It rides on the one out by the flange and the splines inside the carrier, the carrier is supported by those bearings in the middle of the housing.

I wouldn’t worry about that axle ,I’d run it.when I redid the 12 bolt for my truck I got all the brake parts from rock auto , not sure if shipping kills that for you or not.

Okay i wasnt sure if it contacted anything before the carrier splines. Never taken a carrier out before. Its strange because the splines are all fine and dont look to have been touched. Id much rather run it because upgraded shaft money could easily be spent elsewhere, and hell itd probably end up an ornament in the corner of the shop, and i already have one in @tRustyK5 garage.

I have some left over wheel cylinders i didnt put into the ten bolt because my lines look a little fragile and i dont know if i wanna risk breaking one at the moment, but i did need new pads pretty badly. I purchase quite a bit from rock auto. shipping can be brutal if the objects are heavy.... like drums. im hoping the ten bolt ones are the same. The rest of the parts wouldnt be expensive to ship.

@fastazz81 What gm trucks came with 12 bolts. Wondering what to select for the vehicle?

Gangrene was a 79 it had a 12 in it.
Ratbag when it was C10 Had a12 in it. It’s 77
My old 78 short box 4x4 was 12.

Actually anything I have had that was 1980 or older had a 12 bolt in it. After 80 seems to be a toss up Between 10 and 12 Untill 82 then they should all be 10 bolt.

I still have the axles out of Gangrenes rear end, think I tossed the drums. But i’m sure the drums interchange depending on the width of the brake shoes.
