79' GMC C15 - Spruce Caboose

79 GMC 1500
I forget but are you going with factory fuel injection or what on this?

Yes factory set up for now. Injectors are supposed to be good for 400 hp and I don't think it'll make more than that. I am going to run a holley terminator xmax kit for the ECU, dbw and trans control.

I might not use the trans control at first if I stick to the th350, so I gotta make sure I can just not run it, but have the holley computer operate fine without it.

Sold my harness and ecu today for a few bucks so that'll be put towards the holley set up.

Got the rear main seal and cover gasket changed out today. Made sure there wasn't more than .020 inch drop from seal to block.

Also got the top end buttoned up for now. Lubed all the pushrod bottoms and put them back in the way they came out, except the one new rocker and stud I ordered. Held the tips of pushrods for cylinder one down and rotated the crank until the exhaust rod just started to come up. Installed the intake rocker, and then rotated the crank until the intake opens and just closesz then installed exhaust rocker. All bolts to 22ft lbs. Repeated this the whole way down each side. I always had two rocker bolts in future holds to align the main bracket across. Also put assembly lube on the cups of all the rockers, put a bit of oil under each bolt for tightening, and oiled the valve stems and seals plenty.

Put new gaskets and gromets on the valve covers as well.

Oil pickup tube o ring replaced, oil pan on.

Picked up a 4l60e as well with the money I got from the ecu and harness sale. Seems like a fair trade. It's got under 100k miles on it and was in an astro van so It probably didn't haul anything ever. Gonna run a independent trans cooler up front.

Had thoughts about hoisting the bed up to the ceiling with a chainfall but the thought of working above it while it was suspended gave me some worry. Knowing damn well rigging fails , not if but when. So I decided to jack up the truck and move it over. Then used the cherry picker to lift it off and set it down on a few stands I had.

Got to work on the passenger side cab corner.

The patch panels fit pretty good. Definitely not oe quality but I didn't have to mess with them too much.

Not the prettiest things in the world but didn't get much shrinkage except around the outside corner in the outter cab support.. I didn't bother grinding the back side welds down any yet, because when I roll the cab over and do the underneath, I'll smothen it out n paint it. Also probably didn't have to weld any on the back side but still learning what to do and not to do. Had to do the backside left handed and it shows. Felt good to get some welding practice before the body panels.. one of the rear quarters is going to be a big patch..

Got the other side done this morning. This sides patches didn't match up so well but still got the job done. My biggest complaint is how they don't match the rocker profile where the rocker starts and this patch ends. At the back of the cab ( closest to the box ) it's straight with the rocker profile. I'm gonna have to build up like 3/16 mud there to get it to line up

Threw the trans up on the frame and changed out the filter. Fluid was a bit thin but no metal or anything to bring up concern. There's a little oring steel gasket doohickey in the outlet for the filter. Was a pain to get out and punched a new one in easily. Also realized that this 4l60e has a different bell housing than I expected for it's year (2001) but I guess since it was on an astro with a smaller motor that makes sense. Hoping I can use this one also but I'll find out when I go to toss em together.

I get analysis Paralysis when it comes to rust repair. Lol

That moment you realize your unicorn doors are for 73-76... Actually looking at things helps sometimes ..

PXL_20201116_032441797.jpg

Cool to have it but I'd rather it be on my truck. Maybe sell for parts money. 3 year only nos door must fetch a penny, or two.

Or swap the grill to match the 73/74 style which awesome looking

Yea. It's more so hunting down the interior panels, and extra bits that's not really worth it financially to me. The 73-74 grills are niiice though!

Doesn’t that have a removable bell housing?
