79' GMC C15 - Spruce Caboose

79 GMC 1500
oh, and still no luck getting an answer from holley about the handheld. They are closed by the time i am off work, so i have been doing email correspondence with them, but the last time the tech just stopped answering, after suggesting me to check the grounds on the back of the head and that it mighty be a faulty unit... I have yet again emailed them during the week, and im hoping to be free tomorrow to call them n sort it out.

Went to the dump with junk....

.
...
......And came home with better junk.

Last week i sold the green doors originally off this truck, for apparently a really good price because they lasted all of two hours online. Younger kid, probably around 23-24 years and old mentions he has a 91 blazer. Ive been kicking these spare front axle shafts, front driveshaft. and other odds and ends around too long.. Gave him quite the bag of extras with his purchase, after talking for awhile he says hes got a 2004 4l65 hes been stubbing his toes on too long, too. He says if i want it , its mine.. Went to pick it up today and realized its still mated to the transfer case, and driveshaft.

This all worked out pretty well because a local guy was going to build me a 4l60 for the truck, with the correct bellhousing and torque converter. I couldnt use mine as a core, so this left me needing one from him for the LS application. I wasnt told it was 4x4 at first, and i guess i never asked either. I was a tad bummed, but figured its still worth it anyway. Now i wont need a core from the builder, and im pretty sure i can swap over my 6 bolt 4l60 tailshaft housing, to convert it with a new tailshaft in there also. Supposed to have 184K on it.

Keep it IFS, but add the front diff etc so t's AWD and the same height...then twins!

I was Thinking of how cool an AWD c10 would be, just last night haha! I might replace the twins with a stroker kit, and procharger...

Got the tcase seperated, and the tailgate tested. I.d tag on the converter states its a 1600 stall. Going to see if i can take it to a local shop and have the torque converter redone, might save some cash over buying a new one. I think around 2000-2200 would be a nice happy spot.. but hey im just guessing at this point. Lots of surface rust from sitting but hopefully shes all good.

For some reaosn i really want to take a shot at building it myself... but maybe ill give it a go with the 4l60 thats in the truck currently. A friend of a friend who builds trans, said it would be about 3k to have a long lasting 4l60 that parties..

I have an AWD T-case from an escalade here...
Oh man, just got real... I guess i have to! Same time and place as last time:rotfl:?

I havent sunk too much into the front end yet. Now would be the time to start figuring out how to stove a front driveshaft through there

There's lots of good trans rebuild videos on YouTube. Take your time and go for it.
Thats what ive been thinking past couple days...as i watch full tear down and rebuild videos out of curioristy, and found a few textbooks from ATSG. I think with all of those and buying a few other things like a shop press and some specialty hand tools, it should be do able. Definitely going to take some time to take notes and all that but hey, i got more time than i got money!

Going to do some research now and compile an aftermarket parts list, aside from the master rebuild kits contents.

....but now do i build it 2wd or AWD?! Damn, snowballs

I think the easiest would be to graft a GMT 400 front frame/suspension/diff onto the front of your truck...if you were gonna go AWD.

@Greg Ducato is a transmission God you might be able to bug a little here and there during the rebuild.

Would save alot of money in getting custom stuff made, like cv axles ect..

This would be a sweet way to get drive, up to the front of the c10.

Im currently shopping around for a rebuild kit for the 4l60e. Hoping to find something thats also an upgrade like the TCi auto kits?. Anyone have a few pennies of thought on brands or suggested parts? Im constantly treading new water over here hah

Also seems like i should order a new sunshell, servo and few other pieces, the sonnax parts seem reasonable and well reputable. Im sure once i take it apart, ill know of some other pieces ill need to replace, but id like to get a chunk of it before hand.

I will tell you that my son is deep into this rabbit hole with his. The MAWs hit him hard!
He talked directly with Greg about a convertor and it's sitting here waiting.
He also found quite a few parts on Rockauto for a good prices, even on some of the Sonnax parts.

The MAWs are hard to ignore for a logical person with endless interest :rotfl:. Im a firm rock auto supporter so i will check there for sure, hadnt even really thought about that. Is he doing a trans rebuild also?

Greg as in Greg Ducato. Transmission guru, you should really pm the dude before you buy the first part...
