79 K5 H-Bomb build

454 with 049 heads, roller tip rockers, and a performer rpm intake... beyond that I'm not sure.

So someone put differnet (better) heads on it because those TBI blocks came with peanut port heads IIRC. Sounds like a good platform to start with.
 
Iirc, to use gen IV heads on a gen V block you need special head gaskets. Keep that in mine when buying rebuild parts later.

yeah, I used a set of 049s (had them port matched them and bigger valves) on the fj60 build... the motor was stout but I wasnt worried about emissions.

That's a healthy sounding BBC.

And I don't see why an 049 head won't pass a tailpipe test. The cam, ignition, EFi and of course cats are going to play a larger role in all of this.

yeah, i've been researching the "magic" combinations to make it worth it to build the BBC (havent found it yet). My definition of "worth it" is building at least 450hp/500tq. Going the the retro roller cam seems like the easiest way to get there.
 
my buddy has those kind of numbers in his K5, it's a beast for sure.
 
It sounds like you've already made your decision, but yeah I'm all for the BB in the K5.

I think I have... as long as I can find a "proven" build for the BBC. I am going to call the guy that built my last BBC and see if he has any good suggestions.

Waiting for the title on the little red k20... but it should work out. Turns out the seller's wife was my little girl's pre-school teacher and my wife knows her too. Small world. Pretty clean truck and it'll be nice to have "smaller" truck to have. After I swap the crate motor from the K5 I'm kinda thinking about making the lil' red into my DD (has a 700r4 and 3.42s) and reserving the F350 crew for heavy towing as it isnt always the best choice for driving.

That sounds like a well rounded plan. Pretty similar to what I have. The "Tow" rig. The "rock crawler/trail" rig. And the "DD/shop truck" rig.
 
My goal has always been an 8.1

You can find one stock a lot cheaper than pac fab

from there you can figure out which option is better. With the power goals you have it sounds like you'll need to drop some cash in the shortblock regardless.
