8.1 - Allison Green Monster Build

That's a pretty minor clearance issue. I wouldn't be afraid to grind that edge off.

X2 on the headers? What are they?

And I would not use the stock manifolds - any BBC header will bolt onto the 8.1

True, but the stockers are cast stainless and seem decent.

Hahahaha!:haha:, maybe ready for some snow action if I'm lucky.
Boxing the frame is going to take some time. Good thing I bought that plasma cutter.

I am using the diy4x frame boxing kit on my 74. It is cheap and the fit on my frame was really good. Saves a ton of time.

Thanks, I'll have to check that out. Definately would save me some time if it fits good.

Meant to ask, does the diy4x kit box the frame on the outside of the rail or does it fit inside the frame rail?

fits to the outside of the frame. I have some pics if you are interested.

Crap, that's what I thought. I plan on boxing just inside the rails with speed holes drilled about every 6 to 8 inches. If I have to trim the kit that much, might as well start from scratch.

Definately interested in the pics. Who knows, maybe it'll change my mind

Check out the iron maiden build, he used Kerts boxing kit.

I wonder if you came up with that idea by your self?

Nice job!

Hate to burst your bubble, but, that technique has been around for ages. Ol' school hot rodder trick. :D

Finally found it in one of the many pages:doah:Looks good. I'll have to call DIY4X and find out if he is selling the kit with the mods for the K5 that he made for that build. When I talked to him the other day Kert just mentioned the short box kit.

True. I have seen photos where they went crazy with a hole saw on the inter and outer frame rail. There wasn't much stability and rigidity left.

What did you use to punch the holes in your frame? Looks like they have a rounded inner edge.

Hole saw works but a punch press is even better. They're dimpled after the initial hole is made.

Wouldn't be difficult to make the boxing kit smaller by 1/8" on top and bottom or 3/16".... Or whatever.

You probably have a good reason for boxing just inside the rails, but that will be much more time consuming, because the pieces have to be more accurately cut. I just clamped each piece to the frame using washers to space them a way from the frame for good weld penetration and then tacked them in. Ground the plates flush top and bottom and then finished welding. Here are some pics. I started last fall and got interupted by winter. I still have the final pieces to weld in up front, but I want to get my 8.1 installed to figure out how much clearancing of the frame is needed to fit the factory manifolds.
