8.1 - Allison Green Monster Build

Apparently you need clarification.

The boxing kit has arrived at my house, it is not installed. I need to prep the frame before I can weld in the kit. Both of which I hope to accomplish this weekend.

Pictures will follow.

I just came across this thread and skimmed though it...

I've started an 8.1 swap into a different type of vehicle and so I'm somewhat familiar with the 8.1 and its components.

The exhaust manifolds are decidedly NOT cast stainless. Suggesting such means you have never looked at one up close. They are cast iron and have thin-gauge stamped stainless steel shields that bolt on. Look at the photo on page one of this thread!

The 8.1 engine was used in several applications besides light-duty trucks. They were (among others) used in medium-duty trucks. In the medium-duty trucks the AC compressor was mounted high instead of down and to the right. Did you consider using those brackets?

Street and Performance (http://hotrodlane.cc/) has a link to an 8.1 swap.
For those considering this I recommend reading through that first (30 page pdf) as it shows the issues you'll have to deal with....

Sorry was real tired last night, thought you already had started installing it.

**I think that comment was directed at me since I mentioned the stainless earlier. The funniest part about what you said is the the link you post below also says they are cast stainless. :D I have the manifolds sitting on my workbench and agree that they look like they could be cast iron. You should try sticking a magnet to one, and you will find that doesnt work out to well.**

**My buddy picked up a set of those brackets, so if anybody is interested I could get the part numbers. He did say that one of the brackets only showed a few quantity available in the dealership computer so you might want to jump on that....**

Yeah, I looked at them so close, that I unbolted them and threw them in the pile of parts I'm not going to use.

If you had read the thread, you would of realized (probably not) that I'm using aftermarket headers. See pic (whatever)!

Thanks! :waytogo: Already ordered them from GMpartsdirect.com.. Was a special item order. They are supposed to be here today. took about 3 weeks to get.

Yeah, I knew who he was refering to, when he mentioned the manifolds. The part I like, is that I couldn't have seen them up close :D

I suggest you read the whole thing before commenting.

Please tell me what factual statements I made that are in error....

I fully realize you are using headers, my point in posting was to let anyone else who is considering the swap know that the exhaust manifolds are not stainless steel, and there are other options with regard to AC mounting.

I provided the link to the street and performance pdf because that fellow discusses in some detail (with excellent photos) issues such as fuel lines and fuel pump, oil cooler lines, the availability of an aftermarket wiring harness that precludes the necessity of using all the original sensors and features, etc.

Personally I research the heck out of something before I start. That way there are fewer surprises. Butchering a frame because they didn't do some homework ahead of time is (IMHO) buffoonery.

It's your truck and your project. You can do whatever you like.

The quote below is from the link YOU provided.

"I decided to use the manifolds that came with the 8.1l as they
are cast out of stainless steel and have the port for the EGR tubing. One could
use headers for an earlier big-block, but be sure to check clearances as the 8.1L
uses a tall-deck block. Other wise, the flange bolt pattern is the same as other
big-blocks."

Mr. C,

As I mentioned in my last post I provided a link to a pdf written by someone else (Gary Puls), and the reason for providing the link was for all of the information he provided on various other systems one must deal with in a swap such as fuel and electronics.

I didn't write the pdf, I don't know Gary, and while I will do some things in a similar fashion to what he did, on some others I won't.

Also as I wrote above I believe in doing lots of research ahead of time. Providing the link was to let other people know of this information so they could do their own due diligence.

Providing a link to a pdf file that has an error is not the same thing as making that erroneous statement...

Go to point#7 on the following link:

I suggest, that if you would like to share your knowledge on the 8.1, you start your own thread. Please stop using mine (I am a paying member) to share your inaccurate information.

Thanks!

I stand corrected on the manifolds. Thank you for providing the link.

Good luck with your project (and I mean that sincerely)...
