80's short box, "S.E.R.E." Box permanently attached to the cab.

As you can see, my front cross member is an issue. Pretty much the way I saw it when I tacked it in place. That's ok though. Its still doing its job for now. I'll have to redesign before I can put the crank pulley back on.

Engine needs to go back about 1.5". Then I can tack the engine cross member in place and get a support underneath the trans. My hoist is holding up the rear right now.

I think after that, I will make a decision about the steering box and get that mocked up.

Lots of firewall work to do. Tcase/doubler stuff needs to be sorted out as well as the front clip mock up.

I need to get the box dug out and see what kinda shape its in. Might do that this weekend sometime if time permits. Got an extra set of hands around this weekend so that'd help. Gona start snowing soon I hear. Definitely don't want to dig it out of a snow bank later.

Is that a cab I hauled out years ago? It looks vaguely familiar. It's looking good so far.

Great progress Kert
This project is rapidly advancing
Are you going to have to resculpt the firewall with moving the engine back?

Not at the 1.5". Anymore and things would start to get crowded.

Not much to report from the weekend. Lots of other stuff going on.

Did get the box dug out and set on the frame. One side is in good shape as well as the floor. Pass. side is pretty fubar.

Also got the engine slid back that 1.5" maybe a tick more, centered up the output shaft of the transmission and got the engine crossmember tacked in place.

I'll get the box adjusted a bit and snap another photo tomorrow. It's looking an awful lot like a pickup.

LOOKs like one being the key word:rolleyes:

Frickin TANK with chevy skin:haha: :D

You lost me on that one shady.

Box sitting on the frame. I'll probably end up doing all new mounts for the box. Bolting it directly to the frame is not going to work for me. I want to end up with rubber mounts between the box and the frame so, i'll probably make mounts very similar to what the front of the cab has.

We set a front fender on it tonight just to see how things were coming together up there and it all looks pretty good. As it should I guess. Nice to see though. I think I can start welding some of the hangers on a bit more permanently as time progresses.

Kert don't mess around!

I think that was the prototype for his cage kits!

I like it Kert, so are you moving the box mounts outboard of the frame then?

you said it LOOKS like a pickup.... Looks ike one is about it.... this things like a military TANK with the skin of a pickup over it:waytogo:

No kidding Dave!
From a hand made frame to what looks like a k10 in such a short time!

I guess I never thought of that being the cab for the cage prototype...thought they used Stompers. Makes sense now! :thumb:

You got a cage in the cab already!

Yep, that was the prototype as Dave pointed out. Stomper's cage is much more extensive than this one needs to be. And so far, that's just the basic cage kit. It'll get some seat bars, a couple roof bars and some others as well. Still won't be anywhere near as involved.

Was thinking inboard like all the other body mounts. Just had that in my head but it may actually simplify some things to go outboard. I'll have to consider that.

OK, I follow ya now. Thanks. So much more to come.

Got a lot of projects happening on SERE right now.

Designing mounts for the box. not going to mount it the way the factory did.

Steering box mounting is in the works as well as a mild rework on the forward most cross member.

With the axle position confirmed, started doing a little welding here and there on the suspension/frame joints as the opportunities present themselves.

So I guess I missed it, but what does S.E.R.E. stand for???

I knew of the military meaning and I sort of intended to capture that a little bit but for me it means,

Simple, Effective, Reliable and Efficient.

Sort of a duality and my build mantra.

Simple. Keeping in mind, the bare essentials of the truck that get me from point A to point B will be simple. I'm going to add a lot of accessories that make it less simple but they are just that accessories. Simple is a reference to leaf springs, no computerized engine, commonly available replacement parts, manual windows and door locks etc.

Effective. This one is pretty personal I suppose. There are some tasks that I want to use it for and it has to do those effectively. Drive it daily, mild trails, camping, hunting, hauling stuff to and from work and etc. The way I use a vehicle every day.

Reliable. This is key for me. I don't want to have to mess with it all the time. Fire and forget if you will. Of course, this also means, maintenance has to be pretty standard stuff. Like most of our daily drivers, you basically just drive the thing. My last rig I was always messing with. This one is a pretty huge consideration in everything I do now, during the build. "Should I use a rubber line or steel?" STEEL!

Efficient. This mostly speaks to the cost to operate. Tire costs, fuel costs and probably most important, time spent to keep it on the road. My fuel costs to Moab and back last time I went were pretty nasty. Ditching the trailered rig will make things so much more efficient.

Great plan Kert....simplicity rules for reliability!

I hear ya on the fuel bill as well....also why I'm going 6BT! cept I will be trailering still because my rig isn't realible enough to make it there and back
