80's short box, "S.E.R.E." Box permanently attached to the cab.

Wow has it been 5 years already. :yikes: Where does the time go? I bought the truck back in 04 when I was stationed in Utah with the Air Force. I had a small car that I blow the motor on so I used the money I got from it and bought the truck. Not three weeks after buying it I threw a rod out the side of the block. So I had to replace the motor with a gasper 350.

Left the Air Force and returned back home to Maryland. I drove it for a few years more then decided to join this forum and start a build thread of the tear down. Got her down to a rolling chassis but then came a wife, two kids, house and a full time job that I work 48hrs shifts so just don’t have the time or money to do anything.

I have been trying to find some time to work on it, but one day leads to the next. Then it turns into years. I did buy a shackle flip kit from you Kert this summer but that’s as far as I have gotten. Need to get back to work on it. Since I own a townhouse can’t have the truck at the house to be able to work on it when I like.

I have been following your facbook page DIY4x and once you started making your own frame, I knew that’s the route that I need to go. There’s a steel company down the street that I can get the material for the frame from. Just need to figure out how to make that template you used.

Here some pic’s of my truck.

It can definitely be tough at times. Life always gets in the way while we're making other plans.

Lookin' good though!

I can help you with the template!!

Thanks Kert. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am going to try and start stocking up on parts this winter while the weather is bad. Hope to get back to work on her next spring. By the time it's all done there wiil be more part's from DIY4x & LMC Truck then anywhere eles.

I may have overlooked it, but what is the wall thickness of the 2x4 and 2x6 that you're using for the frame rails?

This thread have given me a lot of motivation to ditch my old frame and start new! My SWB will be getting disassembled once I make it home from Asscrackistan and a rectangular tube frame will be in the works.

1/8" thick wall. Slightly thinner than the factory frame material but more rigid considering the 4th wall.

Thanks for the info!

For someone tackling a rectangular tube frame built for harsh off road use and abuse what would you recommend for a super stout frame in regards of wall thickness?

The only reservations I've had about the .125" wall thickness is dragging it over the rocks and possibly denting the tubing. Also depends on the rest of your build plan and if/what you intend to do with a cage.

The rock rash could easily be tamed with a strip added to the bottom surface. I may do this in the center area and again, depending on what I end up doing with a skid. The only place I can see rock rash happening is in the center and possibly the very rear most part.

I think a .1875 wall which I think is the next step up would be pretty heavy.

So, we've been pulled away for the build for a week or so here. Lots of things to do.

Got the fenders out today and bolted them in place, figuring out where we need shims and so on.

Obviously, we need to chop some fangs off!

looking good so far. Definitely need to defang those fenders

No kidding! Not sure if its been mentioned, but what color are you painting it?

I've always been a fan of the greys and metallics and such.

I'm thinking a very dark grey right now. Darker than what was on the crew and blazer.

I saw a Dodge pickup recently that has the color I like. Not sure what year Dodge it was though.
