When you go looking for a 32 spline SM465 mainshaft...it’s generally just as cheap To get the whole thing. Seller was even nice enough to toss in a few spare square body goodies he no longer needed with it.

And yes, early model nv4500 next to it.

Yeah I have 2 extra transmissions here too, after selling the 205's

Well I started going back and forth about the SM465/205 in the truck. Bare minimum the trans and tcase needed a good resealing. It’s a 10 spline and I had picked up the proper front output shaft and parts for the 205 to ditch the Syncro stuff and twin stick it. In the process, the more I thought about it, the more I leaned towards going 32 spline for strength sake, to ditch the 10 spline coupler and for options later on.

So that’s where this transmission came in, and I also have to make a trip and get a round pattern 205 that’ll match up with it. Along with all the stuff for hydroboost/hydro clutch

That doesn’t explain the electronic speedo gauge cluster, vss passenger drop 241 or the nv4500 I have though...

Admittedly I have an issue, when I can’t work on my truck junk I tend to hoard parts and day dream (research) a little too hard. Which in the end makes more work for me once I finally do get into things.

Year long bump.

Finally started making some time between honey do’s and started messing with getting a few things installed.

Up first. ORD HD crossmember I picked up used while I was parts hoarding. With the engine out nows the time to get it knocked out. Only managed to get the factory one pulled today... lo and behold this upgrade was actually needed.

Once this is installed I’ll likely work on cleaning up the parts to start converting to hydroboost and hydroclutch.

They are all like that.
I parted way too many squares and never found one with no cracks.
Some were worse than others.

I figured it was probably a weak link/defect type of deal.

I either have to go buy a right angle drill or roll the front axle out of the way to finish getting the ORD unit bolted in. That was my cue to stop yesterday afternoon.

EDIT*
In the above pic you may see the gorilla tape patch job where the a/c and heater box was on the firewall to make sure no critters took up residence while it’s parked.

I slapped a cheap aluminum flea bay cover over that area.
Almost lined up perfect... almost
Three holes are easy to access, the other three, not so much.

Eventually I’m thinking I’ll use that open area to fab up a dual battery box since the factory one on that side was mutilated and the fender liner is in so so shape where the battery tray bolts in.

Got the and crossmember in, just gotta roll the axle out of the way to pop a few holes in the frame. Mainly because id rather not go buy a right angle drill and I’ve already tried dropping the axle the full extent and no dice.

And since I had a little time this evening after building fence around the yard I decided to go ahead and pull the drivetrain/drivelines for a little attention.

undo the 2 bolts on the front or rear of the leaf springs and lift up . it will let the axle swing WAAAAAAAY down .

prob undo drive shaft and drop rear . also watch brake hoses .

Might give that a try later. Appreciate it

Doing a little inventory inspection today.
I have a 32 spline sm465 sitting here that I picked up just for the hydro bellhousing. Currently I’m going back and forth about using it and converting the 10 spline 205 I have to fit it. (Using ORD adapter w/ short 32 spline input)

Pulling the cover the gears looked good.
Front bearing and seal looked good.
Drained the fluid and the oil didnt look bad.

Pulled the tail shaft housing and found this. (See pics)
The nut looks backed off. Comparing it to the 10 spline sm465 I pulled form the truck it’s not as far on and none of the little keepers are bent down.

Thoughts?
- Replace and run it
-Tear it down

other than this nut the rest of it looks and feels fine

Well, after some deliberation I decided to not mess with the 32 spline SM465 for the time being. Going to stash it for a later point in time.

In the name of less complication and less cash being spent since I’m not making the money I once was at the moment I decided to just re-seal and refill the 10 spline SM465 that was already in the truck, swap to the hydro clutch bell-housing.
The same for the 205, swap in the non syncro front output, twin stick (with ORD kit ive had sitting around forever) reseal and run it.

Cruded up drivetrain - 1
Me at the Car wash - 0

First time I’ve seen high pressure water fail to just easily knock grease/grime off of anything.

Spent a couple of minutes cussing and taking my weekly shower before I realized I was just pissing in the wind.

Going to just scrape it all off I guess and hit what I can with parts wash

It's always done that with me. I've never had a pressure washer take anything off when it's grimy and oily. I'm always so jealous of people that do.

Spray it down with oven cleaner and rinse it off after a few minutes. Then pressure wash it.

dollar store cheep crap at 2 bucks a can . tears that crap up . and also cleans aluminum down good . did my th400 and wow did it come clean .

this was before pic . 50ish k miles th400 from a 88 k30 and nasty leaky 350 . sprayed it on let it sit . wire brush scrubbed best possible and screw driver the tiny spots . 1600 psi pressure washer at home in driveway .

that cheep oven cleaner was pealing the paint off the new china engine stand the trans was bolted to .
