I spoke with Parrish Automotive, he said they typically mill the crank and tap it to the next size up (9/16 or 5/8 in this case). Those guys kick ass, they've always treated me well so I'll yank the heads & crank tonight and drop the crank off tomorrow.

Yeah always a god idea. i got Allstar performance off summit for $30 or so with sealant already on them.
 
At this point, you just as well put a camshaft in it.

Ebke does things with stuff that normally shouldn't be done. I don't know if I would use him as an example a lot.

It has an aftermarket cam in it, unknown what it is exactly. Has a decent lopey idle though....

Picked up a handfull of 9/16 and 5/8 bolts in 1.5" length in both fine and coarse thread pitch to deliver with the crank tomorrow. Also ordered the head bolts from Summit.
 
I always line the axis of the stand with the axis of the cam or higher. Helps the out of balance.
 
FYI grade 8 bolts are quenched and tempered. So they are through hardened but they aren't really that hard to begin with. Strength and hardness aren't directly proportional.

I wouldn't order head bolts unless you specifically see one that has a problem.
 
I would replace the head bolts. No reason to use old stuff like that over. Besides who wants to wait to find out they have a broken one and then order them?
 
There are literally 100 of thousands of big blocks and small blocks with 2 and 3 rebuilds under there belt still using stock head bolts without a single problem. I would be more concerned about the block threads than the head bolts. I have built 12 to 1 355s using stock head bolts without a failure. There are about 100 better places to spend money.

For Chinese made steel that is worse than a pitted GM bolt.
 
I wouldn't waste money on anything less than ARP bolts. Thus, I would use stock but I am sure our resident California Genus will tell us why I am wrong. Better get that dart block ordered up and a new rotating assembly, you know, for piece of mind.

He may be from California but he doesn't assume he is always right. He listens to people with experience. If you think new parts are always better, good for you. I am trying to save him money. I would rather replace the rotators with spacers, get better valve springs, or do a 3 angle valve job with a back cut. Of course it is just my opinion but I have more than a few engine builds under my belt. Of course bein that Is embreed, I much appreciate you schoolin me on all the knowledge you city slickers dun gots. I'm just a simple cuntree bouy.
 
Ebke's abrasive, but correct. Can't we all just get along? I've learned tons of info from this site. From everyone. I consider it all good info, and a learning tool.
